Re:Three Cylinder Reflash - complete

I might think about getting it done... I don't mind sitting in it and just revving it up for a couple minutes. It's garaged at night and plugged in so the only time I idle it is after work....

How about on an 01? I'm taking my truck in some time soon for a new TC (hopefully) and while it's in there, I might as well have them reflash/activate the thing. I had my computer reflashed for a "No Power in OD" and it helped a lot. Free of charge to.

I take it you have rear drum brakes? If thats yes then you will have to be reflashed. If you have a later 01 (01/5) with rear disks theres a chance its already there, just needs to be enabled. Your other reflash was free because your under 3yr/36k warranty, if I would have asked 8,000 miles ago mine would have been free according to the shop foreman.

The reason its defaulted off is exactly what AlpineRAM stated, it will freak out most people if they are not expecting it.

Of course its too warm this morning to try it out....again. Also for the record, I have a high idler as well, I was just after the 3 cylinder feature for cab warm up.

Re:Three Cylinder Reflash - complete

It probably wouldn't freak people out if it was explained to them when purchasing the vehicle... Of course from the sounds of it, the dealers/mechanics don't have a clue either.. : So i'm sure the salesperson wouldn't know squat...

Re:Three Cylinder Reflash - complete

It should come enabled when you buy the truck. I hadn't thought about it until I was outside at midnight starting my truck and wedging the rev accelerator (stick) between the seat and pedal. A coworker started his new powerstroke and I asked if he was just going to let it sit there at an idle. He said that the video tape (nice idea ... if DC is listening) he got with his new truck said it would ramp up to 1200rpm if it was too cold. A minute later...his 1200rpm, mine900-1000rpm after the stick had vibrated up the pedal. In cold climates you would think that they would at least talk about the feature when you are buying the truck. I left the truck unplugged last night but the weather outsmarted me....34f when I started the truck so I still don't know if the enable was successful.

I too was impressed when I was yapping outside with a coworker and his powerstroke just idled up when necessary... :

Re:Three Cylinder Reflash - complete

Finally cold enough to check it out. Well part of it.............went out and started...waited..waited.....slowly but surely it worked its way to close to 1200rpm and held.....tap on the service brake and returns to normal. Drove maybe 2 miles...stopped at parents house, ran inside...left truck running, and it ramped up again to 1200rpm in the driveway.

It wasn't cold enough to try out the 3 cylinder feature yet, hopefully in the morning after I get off work I'll hear it.

Re:Three Cylinder Reflash - complete

Good News & Bad News!

Finally it was cold enough to try the cold weather warm up. I went outside and it was 20deg. Started the truck and I was skeptical that it would work, seeing I've read a lot of posts about the dealers/mechanics having to try several times to get it on. About 30 seconds later up it went to 1200rpm as advertised. I noticed that after letting it run for about 5 minutes it heated up very quickly, about 2 to 3 miles and it was getting warm in the cab too. The bad news is that after that worked so good I took it for a ride to the city, someone stole the muffler!

My wife knows how to hurt a guy though. After she dropped me off at the exhaust shop I was driving in front of her. I looked in the mirror and she gave me a "where's this great sound gesture in the mirror". I think she changed her mind when we went for a ride later. It was worth it, after reading posts I decided to price it out at this shop yesterday. They welded a 3 inch piece in and put a hanger on the pipe for $40.00. It sounds good, though I was a little worried it would be too loud at first. After my wife's comments I was wishing I had chopped the resonator off with the muffler.

Any advice on a box would be appreciated.

Re:Three Cylinder Reflash - complete

Had my 2001.5 done about a year and half ago and it has never worked. Truck sat out at Whislin Jacks over Martin L. Birthday and it was 26 degrees the third morning when I started it. NO FAST idle.

So today I stopped by the dealers and asked them to check to see if it was enable. Found tech working on it out back. He said he did not see anything that said it was enable or disabled, so he choose enable and finished it by cycling the key. He then went back in while I was in the truck and I saw where it said enabled. (I think he most likely missed the disabled statement the first time.

So I said sounds good to me, give it back, I will test it next time I go snowmobiling. However I may just get to test it tomorrow morning here at home, it is cold out, and I have the truck outside, while I am using the garage bay to building a V-box for behind the 5th wheel hitch, to hold our golf clubs.

I am pretty sure the first guy never enabled it correctly. He did do the reflash, because the option was available today.

Sure wish it was colder around here and we were getting more snow in the mountains. We may have to cancel the snowmobile trip for Pres Day and go boating. Those little Cummins B150's in the boat have been calling to me, saying hey SNOKING, there is no snow, we are ready!!! Lets go boating Capt. Chris!

FYI, we have a boating Forum up now at our Yacht Club.
http://www.healthmon.com/psyc/phpbb/

SNOKING

Re:Three Cylinder Reflash - complete

I had my truck at the Dealer for an oil change today, and figured while it was there I'd try fast idle.

Told the service writer that I wanted the "fast idle enabled" and he said he had no idea what I was talking about.
I then said "Cummins reccomends not idleing in cold weather unless the idle speed is increased, cylinder wash down and stuck or bent valve's can happen", he still was clueless.
I then gave him the TSB number and he said "he'd look it up"

They wouldn't let me in the service bay to babysit the technician, some mumbo jumbo about insurance .
(don't think they're too fond of customers more knowlegable then they are ;D)

Got the truck back, work order said "checked for ECM revision and reflashed", didn't say anything about what flash was done.
Above mentioned service writer, as well as most of the service staff were unavailable for questioning due to a "lunch meeting"

Went out to lunch (dinner to most) today, after truck sat in 18-20 degree's for 5 hours, and nothing happened.
Popped the hood to look for the "required by law" sticker and found nothing, in fact the sticker they put there last time is now missing. (rough idle reflash when VP44 was dying)

I'll give it a shot again tomorrow, after a 10 hour sit in below 20 weather.
If it still doesn't work, I'll be trying my darndest to remove a star from their "5 Star Service".
I'll then call around to the other close Dealers to find one that has a clue.
If I can't find one close, rumor has it if I drive a little further north, there is a decent Dealership whith competent and knowlegable Diesel Technicians.

rant, rant, rant.

phox
