I have a '98 24 valve CTD and am considering a warmer thermostat for the winter. Any problems with replacing the 180 degree thermostat with a 195 one. I'd like to get a bit more heat in the cab on those cold Manitoba mornings (below 0F is pretty common here).

 

This is a comin issue , the hoter t-stat will not help much , but there are a few things each does a little bit and a few will give more , putting a winter front , pluging in , taking off the fan, are some .

 

we've had pretty consistant 20-32° mornings lately, and i knew my truck wasn't warming up properly. It wouldn't get about 160 or so, and it took a while to get there. I changed out the t-stat and found that the old one was broken (physically). Wedged a piece of cardboard between the intercooler and radiator and man, what a difference. Truck warms up 100% faster and gets warmer than it did before. check and make sure you t-stat is functioning properly first. changing the thing on these cummins engines is only about a 5 minute job, even if you take a smoke break in the middle.

 

I would block the rad with a winter front or cardboard first as you may never get to 195* without it. I pulled a 6% grade for 15 miles with a half cord of fire wood and barely broke 210 with my rad blocked 100% outside temp was 15* above
