Is There hope for my 1693?

I checked codes this morning and got 1693 and nothing else. I have NO power issues, there is plenty of it, NO dead pedal. No "check engine" light on, my wait to start works and the grid heaters are cycling. I live in a pretty small town and no one has a real scanner. They only thing unusual were my last two starts. The truck had sat for 3 and 4 days without being plugged in with the temp in the teens. Started fine, engine ran a little rough and did get some white smoke. I guess the only reason this is unusual is that I usually plug in. Is there any hope its not the vP44? It's gonna be awhile until I can get to a real scanner. Nothing else is unusual.

Oh and I have 14-15 fuel pressure at idle, 12-13 cruise, and can barely get below 10 WOT near redline up a hill.

I'm sorry to say there isn't much hope for you to know what code triggered the 1693 if you don't have a scanner to retrieve the actual code that set the 1693 companion code in the first place. I would suggest that you clear the 1693 and then see if it returns....eventually, you will have to get your truck to a scanner. In this day and age, it would have to be a very small town for the local mechanic to not own a scanner. It is impossible to diagnose many electronic engine management problems without one.

White smoke is typical of cold combustion....it is raw fuel vapourizing in the manifold. It should be considered normal at very cold temperatures, especially if the truck was not plugged in.....however, excessive white smoke could indicate a problem.

Well this is a town of about 3500. We have two Auto parts stores, they don't have a scanner and the mechanic I went to says his scanner won't read diesels.

How do I clear the code 1693?

That doesn't sound like a very helpful mechanic - there is no such thing as a scanner that reads diesels. It is an OBD II compliant engine management system...period. Any OBD II compatible scanner will pull the codes and clear them. The best way to manually clear codes is to leave the batteries disconnected for a 1/2 hour if you don't have access to a scanner or code reader. If the codes reappear after they have been cleared that means that the problem that triggered the codes still exists.

The mechanic told me he had to have seperate "cards" for his scanner to read foreigns, diesels, domestics, etc. Besides this I wasn't too impressed with him.

Fair enough, I guess.....I'm certainly not a scanner expert. The only cards I have seen mostly pertained to brands....they were not so specific as to require cards for a certain models.

Bought an '01 in great shape last week that gave the 1693 code. Had a dealer scan it. They found the code but said everything checked out fine, including the lift pump and injector pump.
