Test drove another....

well some of you may remember my first few post, which revolve around the idea of purchasing a CTD...

well i test drove another today...my third, and i still havent found "the ONE" i have drove two 24v and a 12v and i do believe i have decided to stick to the 24v market..my new or next question is...

how long should you hear a lift pump "cycle" when the key it turned to the on position...both were stock LP's and one cycled longer than the other..i think.

the first cycled for aprox. 3-5 sec. then the other which i drove today was on for 10 sec'ish

to me that seemed a bit long...both fired right up with no hesitation...the engine sounded very good..and neither had what would be described as a "dead pedel" the drive train on both were VERY strong....one had 124k and the other had 145k....and both were origional owners..(both swore they were stock LP's) and both said they were well aware of the issues fuel systems on these trucks....

the reasons i am staying away from the vehicles is becasue i am very picky...they both had the "wear and tear" of work trucks and i am intrested in a cleaner look...both had the dents, knicks, scratches i dont want...so that keeps me looking.

anywho....i am intrested to hear the thoughts of you "pro's" on the "cycling" of the fuel systems.

thanks

NCA

ps..i am commited to re-doing the fuel system (hopefully just the LP and lines) once i purchase this new truck so that is not an issue...plus adding guages...first thing on the hit list.

It just cycles enough to pressurize the system.

No idea how it knows how long it needs to cycle though, as there is no pressure sensor in a stock fuel system.

I wouldnt think so. With my truck, at times it takes 2 seconds and other times it may take up to 10 seconds or so. I think it all depends on how cold it is and if it was drove recently.

i guess the reason i asked is because i have read over and over about BUMPing the starter and hearing the LP cycle.....and when they do this i have read (most common awnser is) that it should cycle for 20-25 seconds...to me this seemed long...but heck i dont know...that is why i asked...to me a few seconds to maybe 10 seemed possible but 20 seemed a little to long....

Keep looking. It took me over a year and a half to find 'the One'. I finally did and actually paid less than I planned and got a 3 year extended warranty for under what I had decided was a reasonable amount for the truck. I figured on a private party sale for sure and ended up findin 'the One' at a nearby dealer. Patience is a virtue, but the right CTD could last a long time! BTW my pump sometimes seems to run a little longer than other times to pressure up the vp44 too.

Finding the right truck. We stumble into ours. We decieded to go full time
5th wheeling. After reading a lot of RV stuff the 2nd gen. Dodge 3500 dually auto, 4.10 gears looked like it would fill the bill.
Wife called Bellinghame Chrysler, where we purchaed a 2005 Chr t&C` told our saleman, Charlie, what we were looking for. He said he would find us a truck.
He called back 5 minutes later and told my wife, "I have your truck."
She said how do you know it is our truck?"
"Because it is blue." Blue is her favorite car color.
This was in Nov of 05. We got the 02 the way we wanted it. Look like new with only 9,100 miles on it. Not even broke in.
Great truck.. Keep looking your truck is out there.

When you first turn the key on, my LP used to run for around 3 seconds. Bumped the starter, and it goes for 25. If on any more trucks you test drive, when you hit the key on, and it only runs for a half second or so, don't be alarmed. The newer software updates from Chrysler changed this, and its still ok.

tate thank you so much....that is the awnser i needed to hear...so 3-5 is normal...is a 10 sec cycle abnormal....does it indicate something maybe a problem starting...

and i do relize that it will cycle longer if the truck has sat for a while like over night or weekend or what ever...it probally wouldnt cycle that much at all if you drove the truck to the store ran in and grabed some milk and jumped right in it to go home...i would assume because the system is "primed" and fuel is at the VP...right...

secondlly there is a difference between a "key to the on" and "bumping the starter" pump cycle...that is good to know...25 sec is only when "bumping"

thanks

With the old ECM software the lift pumps would cycle longer approx 10 seconds, when the ECM gets reflashed with updated software the cycle time is shorter. I noticed this when I used my Smarty for the first time. Smarty comes with the latest software updates.
