In tank pump

Just had my VP-44 replaced at 59K along with the stock lift pump. I was surprised to find the factory replacement now inside the fuel tank. Apparently, this is the latest retrofit from Dodge. Concept makes sence but can anyone tell me the manufacture and specs listed with this pump? How about longevity or reliability testimonials? I knew the lift pumps have been a problem so I've been running a frame mount unit from BD in conjunction to hopefully extend the life of the VP. So much for that theory!

02 2500. Edge EZ module, AFE Intake. Basically stock.

Welcome to the DTR!

Have heard mixed reviews on the intank pump. Solves the problem of lift pumps well.... but does reduce flow should you be interested in getting to 400+ HP. For example, i've read the FASS system flows so much fuel that it can't be used with the intank pump.

For those staying closer to stock HP...have heard no negative comments! To new for "longevity or reliability" reports.... but nothing bad so far, from what I've read.

I just had a in-tank pump put in about 1000 miles ago. When I did this some said I wouldn't have the same power with the new in-tank pump with my Super Chip, exhaust, AFE intake, etc., etc. I must say that I didn't see any change in the performance one bit. I also asked the mechanic that installed it about the fact that they don't put out the same pressure as the stock pump and he said the pressure is less but the VOLUME is more out of this new in-tank pump. He said he's installed many of these new pumps and has heard only excellent reports after thousands of miles of use.

You can purchase a quallity aftermarket lift pump which will replace your original or tank retro. I just replaced my second from Mopar at 94000. I went with the aftermarket because I just do not have the funds for the Fass. I'm friends with the top diesel mechanic at my dealership and he said before you replace your engine or rail mounted pump with an in the tank pump, buy the aftermarket. Which he said performs better than the factory Cummins.

I've got almost 50K miles on my in-tank pump. Still a steady 5-6 psi fuel pressure at the injector pump and no problems so far. (knocking on wood)

Took a little over a 1000 miles after the intank pump retrofit performed under warrenty to wipe out the VP44. At the time Edge EZ only 8 psi idle, 3psi highway speed, WOT 0-1. Currently disabled, more like permantly replaced.

I got the intank pump at 80,000 mi and it would run at 8-9 psi at idle and would go down to 1-0 psi wot. I dont like tose numbers so I put a holley blue helper and the truck thanked me for it. And the whole more volume theory is a bunch of BULL., especially with the banjo bolts they put in place of the old pump location.

I had the in tank pump put in last summer and was at 8psi idle and could suck it down to 0 WOT with just the Smarty. I then installed the Vulcan big line kit to help the in tank pump and now I am running at 9psi idle/cruising and about 6psi WOT.

I got it and im running about the same numbers. But, I am going to replace it with a FASS system within a month or so. I dont like those numbers and I dont even have a box put on my truck yet. 6psi isnt a lot when your wanting power and smoke.

Consider this about the in-tank pump "fix":

If one fails (and some have), do you want to drop the tank/lift the bed to change it out in a WalMart parking lot if it quits when you're on the road??

If one is going to run a stock lift pump, sometimes the devil you know is better than the devil you don't know.

Yes this is all true, however the only way Chrysler will replace a VP44 under warranty now is if you also have the in-tank lift pump installed, which they also do under warranty.

My 2002 only had the 3/36 warranty, and the 5/100 engine warranty has expired, so that's not an issue.

My 02 came with a 7 year 70k mile powertrain warranty, I'm sure yours did also and they replaced the VP44 for me under the powertrain warranty but only if I also let them put in the in-tank pump. This was in 06 which would make it 4 years old.

Nope, the early 2002s came with a 3/36 - I ordered mine in the summer of 2001 and took delivery on 8/15/01. The later 2002s were given a 7/70 warranty as a sales inducement to clear them out before the 3rd generation 2003 trucks were introduced.

oh man that sucks, but even more so if you had to pay to replace a bad VP44, when other 02 owners are getting theirs replaced for free.
