Synthetic Oil Question
Synthetic Oil Question
My last oil change I switched to Rotella 5w-40 synthetic & almost immediately noticed a difference in the truck as well as a fowl oil odor for the first 300 miles... well i went back to wal-mart where I got it before and they have no more on the shelf, but they do have the mobil 5w-40 synthetic at 19.50 gallon and it says it meets all diesel certs for the cummins.
My question is would it be alright to switch to the mobil this time even though there would still be some rotella in the system... And if I go back to walmart again down the road and there out of that but have rotella would it hurt to go back to that?
Basically is it alright to switch oils?

i dont think that it would hurt to have a little bit of rotella left in it. Im running a fully synthethic rotella t in mine. anyways i wouldnt worry about it if it was my truck but dont do it jsut becasue i said something. but i try to stick with the same oil every time. And as for the foul odor i think that it might be a little bit of oil spilled on the exhaust manifold. Because after all the exhaust manifold is right under the filler cap.

engcogod,
Actually, you have it backwards. From what I understand, the mobil oil is a true synthetic, while the rotella is not. I am sure someone will chime in with the differences.

My "camp" says to choose one oil and stick with it. The additive packages are designed to counteract the particular acids, etc. that are produced when running that oil. Changing brands can lead to not having the proper package for the residual conataminates in your motor.
Take it for what it's worth. The "theory" was taught to me by a guy that used t make NASCAR and hot boat motors for a living. That sid i use Delo 15-40 in every motor I own gas or diesel. If I lived where it gets cold in the winter I might change that.

if you are worried, short change it. I read on Mobil's site once that Mobil1 is compatable with other oils, but just run the first batch for 1000 miles and change it a second time and all the rottela will be diluted enough.
You should try to stick with one oil, but if you are switching over it is not an issue

What about soot control differences between the Rotella and Mobil 1 ? Rotella seems to tout that, while there is little mention of it from Mobil 1 ( at least on their 5 quart container ). Does Mobil 1 have similar / the same soot control properties ?
