surging when torque converter locks up.

When the torque converter locks up and I try to sty at a constant speed the engine RPM rises to about 1800 and then falls back to 1200. the speed stays constant. I had it scanned and nothing came up. What's going on and wht can I do to correct it? It sounds like the Torque converter is giving up.

427AC: I think you don't have a surge but a TC lock-unlock problem. This can sometimes be remedied by doing the APPS recalibration. (do a search for it here or in the tech faq, I'm too lazy right now)
Another possibility would be electrical noise which can be remedied by cleaning the PCM contacts and the battery posts.
If this does help a bit but not quite you can try a noise filter from DTT.
Just 2 things to try before maybe scrapping a good TC (as good as a stock TC might be ;D )

What AlpineRAM said. I had same problem. Did the first two, they worked for a few days. Just installed the noise filter from DTT. Worked like a charm.

At the risk of sounding really stupid. where is the PCM?

427AC,

On my '99, it's on the passenger-side firewall, just behind where the air box used to be ;D, and my BHAF now resides. It's the box with all the wires running out if it.
