Steering Box

Should there be any play in the shaft the goes into the steering box. If I grab the steering shaft, I can move it a little. I am trying to get to the bottom of the floating feeling I sometimes have in the front end. I have replaced the usual suspected parts. As of the begining of the summer the ball joints were fine.

Check out the steering stabilizer. I have put them on my own truck, as well as many customer's trucks, does wonders for the steering, and cheaper than a steering box.

But it won't do much for you if the steering box is already shot....been there, done that. You can try the bearing preload adjustment, instructions are over on dodgeram.org. I did it until I reached the point of diminishing returns and replaced the box. PSC makes a nice box for around $300.....

Agree with Cowhand. PSC is excellent...and a fair price.

That's if it's beyond the point where the DSS will solve your problem.

COWHAND...will the PSC box hold by itself....or does it still need the DSS for lasting - long term?

Is the Steering Gear Brace that is on the PSC website the same or different the DSS from SolidSteel?

This steering brace is a DSS - the same unit that DSS offers. The PSC box has no extra bearing support on the pitman shaft compared to the stock box so it would benefit from a DSS.

I do not understand how the PSC box can be "variable ratio". What is the ratio in the stock box? I want to get a box with a quicker ratio as my truck seems to understeer.

Most all steering Saginaw steering boxes are variable ratio......fixed ratio boxes are a thing of the past. I have no idea if PCS offers different ratios.

To anyone intrested:

I spoke with someone at PCS today, his opinion was to use the DSS kit if the steering box was not leaking.

I got my DSS from PSC as well as a hydro assist kit for my jeep. They make good stuff and the customer service can't be beat.

Should I have the steering box adjusted before I put the kit on? I think it would make sense. I had a buddy of mine driving the truck this weekend. He almost put it in the buck brush.

The clyinder assist box allows the more things to be hooked up to it versus the variable ratio box.

Another vote for PCS with a DSS and Borgeson shaft. Have that setup on my 1500 after the original box puked the pitman seal. Unfortunately the Borgeson shaft is rusting but the annoying clunk is gone.
