Starter Kickback
Starter Kickback
When I shut down there is a sound kind of like the starter is getting spun by the flywheel just a bit. It could be something else but I don’t have any idea what. Any thoughts?

Normal for engine to stop on compression stroke and kick back. AT which time the rotor (alternator) has enough interia to chirp the drive belt.
Considered normal, but check belt for wear and tensioner for alignment.

It's the turbo if it is real faint sound of something winding down I can get out and walk all the way around to the passenger door while my turbo's wind down. I have had people ask what the noise was before when they got out of the truck.
It isn’t belt squeal that I’m hearing. I’ve been hearing that for the past few thousand or so shutdowns and that sound hasn’t changed any.
What I’m hearing stops too soon to be the turbo. It kind of sounds like when the engine does the kickback on shutdown, it catches the starter gear and spins the starter just a bit. The sound will last for less than a second.
I’m headed out on a run to FL. today and I won’t have time to reply till I get back.

Had the same thing last week. Pulled the starter, found a great rebuilder and told him about the noise. He mentioned the return spring for the starter gear, so I told him to go at it. Well, lo and behold, the return spring had collapsed, to 1/2 it's length, and was allowing the gear to float and rub on the flywheel. That was the noise I was hearing. Upon closer inspection, I could see the wear marks on the gear and the flywheel. BTW, The reason I originally pulled it was because the contacts were gone. The contact on the battery side was almost paper thin.

I took off the starter when I got back from Florida and checked it out. The spring on the starter gear is very weak and I can see wear marks on the gear where it was hitting the flywheel when the engine shakes and kicks back during shutdown. I took it to the starter shop and the guy said not only was the spring shot the front bearing and housing is worn out.
