sounds of the CTD????
ive been really paying attention to the sounds of my engine lately. ive heard someone ask if there engine sounded "tinney". im wondering what sounds are normal and which ones are cause for concern? also what location of the engine should they be coming from? i know this seems like a silly thread but im just trying to learn more to keep this thing runnin right.
Tappet ticks and diesel clunks with some gear noise a hint of turbo whine...
If you're careful of moving parts (paying real close attention) you can find the source of sounds using a fuel hose. One end in your ear and the other pointing at a location on the motor. Again pay attention to where you're putting your limbs so you don't get anything torn off. That ISB will not feel a thing when it yanks your hand through the accessories, or sends a fan blade through your knuckles.
A buddy of mine uses his elbow to "direct sound" while putting his palm on his ear, but I have not practiced this method of sound isolation... I like to keep my head away from the engine if I can.
I can't say for sure what your "tinney" sound is... tappets? Where exactly is it coming from? Use the hose to find out where the sound is coming from, if you can, and then you can ask what it should sound like.
It would take a long time to post the entire anatomy of the engine and each sound that is made.
