"snap,pop!!" {ouch}

Hello all and thank you for reading my post.
this weekend my brothers chevy got high centered on a large burm of dirt and requested my cummins to pull it off.No problem I say and hookp the strap.I start to pull in four low just for the slow speed of things and all of a sudden the whole truck slams and my four wheel is gone .I jump out and the double u joint for the fornt axle has been smashed to little pieces. the joint just out of the transfer case ...the most exspensive one... come to find out my right front tire was on asphault and the other front on hard packed dirt. both rears were in mud and it was night at the time and i was not the one hooking up the strap.I had no idea of the terrain untill my u joint exploded and so did my wallet. Needless to say I will thuroughly inspect the terra firma next time my rig does the work.any way am i alone or has this happened to any body else.

JIM

p.s also the strap broke and slammed my tail gate so hard the hook put a hole in my t gate. I guess better that and not my window.

Had a GMC one-ton 4sp. that did similar years ago, except it was the spline shaft from the tranny to the transfer case that snapped - let the clutch out and nothing! No forward, no reverse, nothing. That was an expensive 4-wheeling day. Sorry to hear your U-joint went out. Hope it is fixed quick.

Straps with hooks are bad.
How bad Egon?
Crossing the streams bad.

Get yourself a nice 3-4 inch strap with loops, at least 30 feet or so,
then put a blanket or coat over the strap about midway to drop the strap to the ground if it should break.
Couple of 3/4" shackles for connection points should the towee hot have tow hooks.

Sorry to hear about the U-joint.
Do you have a leveling kit, or lift kit?
Perhaps the extra angle contributed to the failure.

My recomendation would be to find a local Spicer Dealer. They make all the parts in the Dana 60 front end and buy fron them they are 1/5 the cost of a dealer and all the parts are OEM.

Or find yourself some 1" diameter steel braided rope with loops on the end. I've pulled more trucks, trees, fourwheels, concrete posts, and tractors out of the mud/gumbo clay than I can count. It's rated for 40 or 50 tons. Possibly more.

I would be willing to bet your CV was dry and loose, possibly cracked before this happened. Sorry to hear about the misfortune.

Just think Luckily it wasn't worse as it was when i was with my friend in his truck here and in sub 0 temps.

hmmm ......... the joint must have been going, cause I've had a few very heavy pulls with mine even spining a bit on wet stuff and having the tires grab hard when they hit the hard pack(this is very hard on stuff) and nothing has broken .......................

mine went this winter but just wore out and got sloppy

I replaced all 5 u-joints and the cardigan joint ball with spicer/dana stuff ............ should hopefully last for a while now

I broke several on my CJ, and bent a couple of drive shafts. But they are are 1/4 the size of my rams.

This spring I was pulling out a stump from the yard, it let go real quick and flew into the talegate, , Big Dent.

I like to use a Jerk strap, with loops and a coat or blanket drooped in the middle. I have used the big four inch ones to pull 5 tonne trucks out of the ditch at work and never broke one. They stretch and then snap back like an elastic so there is no Jerk like in a chain, or rope..

Good Luck with the repair.

thanks a lot for the replies.I work at volvo dealer and have a whole sale discount on other dealer ships. One of the dealers is a dodge dealer.I have a whole new shaft on order that should be hear on thurs.it comes with all new joints an everything for about 400 dollars. and as far as the strap goes,I really learned my lesson on the subject. I was saving to get a new turbo but this fix has priority. Any way thanks for the info.
