sluggish rpm's

when i depress the throttle pedal it is slow to build up rpm's. i can hold down the pedal and it will top out at two grand and then slowly build up after that and max out at about twenty-eight hundred grand.

What is your truck? If it's between about '99-'02 it sounds like the injection pump to me.

from what I've found out when my truck had problems, they put the fuel pump in the fuel tank, after so many miles it can't get enough fuel to the injection pump which means then you usually have to replace the injection pump (VP44) and the fuel pump. Is your truck throwing any codes?

how about fuel pressure, and also is your turbo spooling. no or low boost will not allow fuel enrichment. also check the intercooler and connectors for blowouts.

Start by reading any fault codes. Sounds to me like your truck is in a "limp" mode. I've had this same type is problem. After reading the fault code, I replaced my MAP sensor and I was back on the road. But your problem could be an injection pump issue, as mentioned above. But you just won't know intill the fault codes are read.

No codes? OK, maybe the injection pump is ok. But obviously it sounds like a major lack of fuel. So first you need to check the fuel pressure at the injection pump; maybe the lift pump took a dump. If that is good, do a APPS reset.

Why not go the simplest route and change the filter first then work from there.

So true...... I was just assuming that simple items like fuel filters and air filters would have already been replaced with new ones........

Yes you can check the fuel pressure yourself. But you will need a fuel pressure check gauge to do so. You can get one from Vulcan Performance or Kragen/AutoZone or Napa. As for how, there is a schaeder type valve on the injection pump. It'll be right where the fuel line (whiich comes from the fuel filter canister) goes into the injection pump. Attach the test gaueg to that. If the pressure is real low (anything under 5 psi, IMO) or non-exsistent, that'll usually mean the lift pump is bad.

Have you tried an APPS reset yet? It's real easy to do. The instructions are on the top of this page under the heading "Tech Facts". All you really have to do is to disconnect both batteries for a short period of time; then the proceedure with the throttle peddle. Easy.
