Welcome to DTR!
Sure, most of us have tossed that ring in the trash. Cheap (free) simple, and let her sing like a fat chick!

I didnt notice too much difference untill I put on the BHAF or my AFE unit
The stock box does a pretty good job of muffling the sound.

Pull the black tube out of the fender. The air intake to the filter box. (FREE)
-OR-
Just install a BHAF (Big Honkin' Air Filter) Cost you $50-$60
This makes mine really sing loud!
To really get it singing... Straight pipe the exhuast! Cost about $30-$40
I think the bombing bug has bit again...
One problem with removing the ring is it decreases turbulence and effeciency.
The reason the turbo is louder is because of the air disruption.
I kinda wish i could put mine back on.
Any restriction in the intake that isnt a smooth transition hurts.

Ring
I read a post about it last night and took it out today. There was not a big difference sound level, but I do here a high pitch sound that sounds cool. The snap ring was a pain in the *** to remove, some guys have an easy time with it from what I read here.
