Dead easy,
If you take the rubber air intake hose off the turbo and look inside the turbo, you will see a conical shaped ring, that is the silencer ring.
This ring is held in place by a large spring clip which sits in a groove, use a strong knife or screwdriver to pry out the spring clip, and the silencer ring will come out. be careful not to snap what ever you use to pry out the clip, as you don't want, any bits of metal falling into the turbo.
It took about 10 min start to finish. Hope this is of use, goodluck........

Beware that while this seems to be easy on most trucks, on mine it was a bear. Combination of the split in the retainer ring being at 12 o'clock and therefore not visible and I guess a particularly tenacious retainer ring made this a foul-mouthed bloody-knuckled affair.

The 03 and up are a more a pain in the *** with the turbo setting lower and then some wise guy puts the ring in where its harder to get to. I can just here him now-They will have fun trying to get this one out.

I think you ringless guys are a bit nutty. It can not help the air stream going into the turbo to have this part removed. IMHO SNOKING

I guess while I am putting on my flame retardent suit, I will stay that people that want to make smoke just to make smoke better hang onto what they got, "because of the issue of diesel smoke" things are a changing. More and more states, counties and cities will require testing of diesel trucks and auto's for particle emissions, and we will all be getting low sulfur diesel shortly.

yes it can... it allows the MWE slot to do its job better... the old 1st gens surge if you put a tight turbine housing on an H1C, but if you put a slotted housing on them, the surge goes away... on the new 3rd gen trucks, the turbos will huff and puff even with no mods... Piers recomends pulling the silencer ring to aleviate the problem.

Holset has been building turbos for a long time, and they're pretty good at it... the never designed these turbos to be run with a silencer ring, that was dodge's choice and ONLY for sound control.

your mileage may vary.

I am sure some has. I always hear about it on the ring removal threads. The general consensus was it does not affect power. You are probably thinking the ring helps funnel the air into the turbine right?

dyno tests show no difference...

but dyno tests are done at WOT...

where you MAY run into problems is light/moderat throttle situations out on the highway with a "big compressor/small turbine" combo... like putting a 16 or smaller on an old H1C on a 1st gen. sometimes you can run into surge and sometimes a slotted housing will help aleviate it.

Reply I received from Piers:

"That's correct, the silencer ring does not allow enough air to recycle. By removing it, you help the turbo to breath better.

Piers"

SOOOOOO if you want that extra 1.42354345543455345 HP, take it out and enjoy the sound and raw cotton ball pulling power!!!!! (Please note that that is less than 1.5....not any more or less!!!)
