silencer ring
silencer ring
what is it there for? if it is what i am looking at. it is held in place by a snap ring. so by the looks of it. looks like it directs air flow to the compressor of the turbo. what is the benefit of removing it?
thanks

Re:silencer ring
First of all welcome to the site. The ring is held in by a snap ring and it is cone shaped. All it does is keep the turbo whistle down if you like the whistle of a turbo then take it out if not leave it in. thats all it does
Re:silencer ring
I pulled mine out of my 97, it took about 10 minutes.By the time I figured out where it was located it only took 5 minutes to remove. The way to describe the sound is...you know how the whistle in your engine sounds around 80 MPH at WOT? Take out the ring and it will sound like that above 30 MPH... Very cool. It gives a pitch, at certain rpms, that to some people, it annoys their ears, but once they get used to it, it is music to your and their ears!!!
My wife even remarks as to how good the truck sounds!!!
Re:silencer ring
I took mine out this time last year. I had a hell of a time with the snap ring and I am pretty good with a screwdriver but you need one super thin to get behind it and twist it out.

If you take it out you will notice many head turns at lights. People think it is a big rig then they see a nice Dodge Ram 8)

Just for kicks. Very very temporary too. After you remove the silencer ring, remove the air intker hose from the airfilter. NOW THAT IS A WHISTLE. Only drive around the block as it is not the best thing to do. (suck dust and dirt into your turbo) WHistle at 15mph!! It is amusing.
Re:silencer ring
I haven't done it with the silencer ring off yet, but I did WOT my truck once when the air box was off. Talk about a shrill, high pitched, beautiful whistle. ;D And that was at 20 psi. I wonder what 31 with no silencer ring would sound like. ;D
Re:silencer ring
When I dyno'd,, on my last attempt on the rollers, I pulled off my BHAF, and left my hood open.
Got the rollers up to speed,, I was runnin' 1,100RPM in 6th gear. Gave the guy the "ok" nod, and I went WOT,,
Well,, the growl of dual 5" stacks, and a PDR HX-40 screaming to 45PSI completely unmuffled, all the way to 3,500RPM, in a garage, was quite an event to remember.
Back to the topic. The Dodge Ram is the only application for the Cummins that includes a "silencer ring". It does NOTHING, but quiet down the turbo. There have been quite a few tests done with MPG and Boost, removing, changing, leaving the silencer ring in proved no differences, no positive, or negative results were achieved.

Re:silencer ring
Probably doesn't make any measurable difference, but the louder whistle comes from increased air turbulence in front of the spinning turbo pinwheel. The cone silences the air by channeling it or directing it through the blades. So there is some benefit from leaving the cone in, but it's probably the difference between the pinwheel bearing surfaces pitting or distorting at 700K miles versus 650K miles, or not much difference at all.
Talked to a Cummins engineer about this a while back, that's what he said.
