This is what it looks like (thanks to Mopar1973man for the picture)
Use a small flathead screwdriver and work the snap ring out. Then you can pull the silencer ring easily with your fingers.

When the ring is out that is. When the ring is in you don't hear the whistle as much. All it is in there for is the sound. It does nothing to affect performance.

Good pix. That actually looks like it is LESS "flow-friendly" that with the ring. Doesn't look like it gives you any less restriction. Has anyone actually done a dyno for "with" or "without" the ring? Or is it really just all about the sound?!

While the turbo force feeds our diesel beasts and is not as intake flow dependent as a naturally aspirated motor. I do see aot of members here who have added AFE's and K&N's and such. So, why would one want to add a big flat spot to create a reversion wave right in front of the turbo? Basic fluid dynamics teaches us that any flat suface in a flow tract will create reversion waves and slow down or stop the column of air in the tract. I really don't see anyting but harm to performance doing that mod and the ony reason to do it is for sound, more turbo whine. Which I think is annoying on a long haul.... my $.02....

Well, it's probably like trailtoy said, that's the sound of your horsepower bouncing back up the intake tract. Since they first started trying to wring out more horsepower from internal combustion engines, engineers and racers have gone to a lot of trouble to eliminate loss caused by reversion. Looks like you're taking a huge step backwards by taking out that ring.

Ok...

Take the ring out... Now take a close look at the outer area. There is a slot going towards the inner area just under the vanes of the compressor wheel. So with the ring in you are blocking air entering this outer area and entering the turbo. This is what makes the whistling noise.

There is no improvement or loss with or without the silencer ring in place.

Yes this has been check on a dyno before...

From one gramps to another - that is not a popular opinion around here, no matter how great the obvious truth in it.

Also popular, is removing the flow-straightening device from the turbo inlet ducting in the '05 and up common rail trucks.

BTW, have you read the recent TAG post - an after-market add-on device amazingly similar to the quickly-removed '05 'muffler'.

I did a lot of post-searching-reading on the silencer-ring issue, only to find a lot of opinion\supposition, with only a few seemingly informed dissenters crying in the wilderness.
