The slots referred to are not completely closed off by the collector ring - only reduced in cross-sectional inlet area.

That is to compensate for the curved intake duct - reference the post above concerning requirements for X diameters of straight ducting to the compressor intake.

I was searching for related dyno charts and would like to see them, along with the as-run intake configuration - oem ducting, direct-coupled BHSAF, or what.

Found this service manuel for the Holset turbo......if nothing else , it's a great resource for someone needing to clean or replace parts on theire turbo.......I'm still trying to find some test data showing what this ring does or does not do......

http://www.siipicossu.com/manuaaleja...2035%2040W.pdf

Its called an inlet baffel in this service manual......

Also found this article....
What is a "silencer ring"?

"A silencer ring is a metal baffle placed into the turbocharger inlet to reduce whistle from the turbocharger. It is installed in Ram truck engines at the request of Chrysler. The silencer ring has no effect on engine output, EGT, or boost levels.
Removal: Remove the flex hose from the front of the turbo that goes to the breather. Just inside the turbo, you will see a snap ring that looks like a piston ring(charcoal color), very gently with a small flat blade screw driver, lift one end of the snap ring out of the groove, then continue to work around the snap ring, lifting it out of the groove. When the snap ring has been removed, you can easily remove the silence ring." R&R Instructions from Holset: Inletnew.pdf

link to above article here....http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/FAQ/turbo_faq.htm

It takes some pokeing around , but there is a ton of info here http://www.holset.co.uk/files/ on the Holset turbos found in our trucks......... I have yet to find any data showing before and after figures........if I can find my ring , I copied this from another Cummins fan!

TAG dyno data

about a 1/4 of the way down shows a dyno with and without the TAG on a Ford...3.1 HP difference. was it the TAG or was it the fluctuation from run to run? i dont know. i understand the importance of laminar flow and how the TAG achieves that but many of us also run extrude honed injectors rather EDMs and that isnt gaining any efficiency so......

if you want the whistle, take out the ring.
if you dont, then keep the ring there.

Appreciate the link, pgilles - and, you're right, it's always owner's choice.

Guess I've always been driven to know the how and why of it, and work from there, regardless of opinion.

I probably don't get too excited about it 'cause I listen to it all day long AT the work place! Big yellow iron. Play in dirt, get money. What could be better!
The biggest engine I've driven was a 69 liter(yes! sixty nine) quad turbo V16 Cat engine, about 1800hp. Usually much smaller but still lots of smoke, noise, and horsepower.......

That looks very similar to what we put on our 110 foot cutters for its main engines. And those turbos whistle really good.
