Shifting Question

Im sorry if this has been brought up a million times, but I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.

My father-in-law has a 2000 Ford CCLB 7.3L auto. I have always wanted a Cummins powered Dodge, but I always wanted a 5 or 6 speed. Here lately I have been thinking of going with an automatic though.

My question is about the shifting/TC lockup on the Ford vs. the Dodge. His truck under light throttle shifts 1-2, 2-3, locks up the TC in 3rd, and then goes to OD. If you give it a little more fuel, it shifts the 1-2, and then immediately locks the converter as soon as it shifts. After that it goes into 3rd and 4th and seems like it stays locked even while shifting. His truck is stock except for a BD torque converter he had installed when the transmission went out about 100k miles ago.

How do the Dodge trucks shift? I really like how his truck will lock the converter in 2nd gear when you put a load on it. The reason I am considering an automatic is that awesome surge of power when that thing locks. I have driven a 6 speed Cummins, but never an auto. Sorry this is so long but I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out.

Thanks,
Joey
