serious smoke, rough running problem

Every day when I start my truck it blows a lot of white smoke and runs rough like I just changed the fuel filter or something. After warming up for several minutes or driving a mile or two it goes away and runs smooth, zero smoke, etc. Also occasionally it seems to lose power when driving. I can have it floored and the engine won't rev up and then all of a sudden it will just kick in and drive like normal. Temperatures are in the 60's when I am starting the truck so I don't think it has to do with the cold too much. Any ideas? I am not talking about a little smoke here either guys. If there is no wind it smokes so much I can't see the truck. If people are around they gather and point fingers etc.

you better check the codes, turn the key from off to run 3x and look in the odo window, if you see po0216, if so you will be spending that tax return soon. it could be several things mostly minor from fuel filter, air filter, etc but it sounds like the death wiggles of the ip to me. check the codes and repost.....good luck

I just checked the codes. They are P0500, P0460, P1693. I sure hope it is not the VP. I have 157k and have already had two installed but they were under warranty.

Any idea on these codes? I lost the link to the page that tells what they are. If this is going to be a VP or other expensive fix I think I am going to trade the truck.

Not to get off topic but what do you consider an engine? I mean everyone raves about the cummins and how great and reliable it is and I agree when it comes to the block, pistons, rods, etc but what good does it do when the injection pump is junk? I have 157k and am looking at possibly the third injection pump. At $1000 a pop plus labor that is no small inconvience. I know three other dodge owners who have had problems with the VP and you would think that dodge would make good on it.

I was just reading the other day on the duramaxes and that they have problems with the injectors leaking. GM stepped up and gave at no cost a 7yr 200,000 mile warranty on these parts because they realized and admitted there was a problem. I still am leary of the dmax and want to keep my dodge but I cant aford to be putting in a VP every year.

Bdog, man, I can understand what you are saying. I have been through 4 lift pumps, and now the IP is going out. It's still under the mileage and time warranty, and the dealer won't touch it.

Like yourself, I am a little leery of the DMax, but the dealer here backs the warranty really well. Talk about the rock and the hard place...

Thanks for the link MnTom, it lists the P0500 but the others - 0460 and 1693 are not listed. Any idea what they are?

po500 is no vehicle speed sensor signal, this should trigger the check eng light, po460 is no fuel level unit no change over miles.

you are in luck the speed sensor has to be cheaper then an ip! never bought one don't know.

hope that helps,
GREG

Hey bdog, I was just reading another post about white smoke. I guess that the grid heater can go out not causing the air to be heated (obviously) and creating white smoke and alot of it. It is jus t like ford powerstrokes when glowplugs go out. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies guys. I gave up and traded her iin yesterday. I got a good trade in for 15k and I came home with a 02 Chevy with half the miles I had on my dodge. I hope it holds together for me.
