Rocker cover refinish

I was finishing up the replacement of the heater core and related parts and decided while my truck was layed up till spring I would do a few extra things to clean her all up and make her pretty again.

The rocker cover was the first thing that caught my eye as the finish on the raised portions was peeling off. I was going to sand it down and just put a coat of clear over top to protect it for another 8 years. lol

What I found when I sanded it was that it became black for some reason instead of becoming shiney.

My questions is, have any of you tried to do this and if so what was the best way to do this?

Thanks

Jason

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Probablly gonna have to sand blast to keep oxidization from occuring as you sand. Try with one of those inexpensive hand held units, carefully.

Use some kind of solvent or acetone to clean it. The foreign matter in the casting is what is causing the discoloration. When you get it all smoothed out, then you can polish it.
