Take the plastic air intake tube off of the turbo and use a pair of needle nose pliars or screwdriver to get the retention ring out. It just squeezes together and pulls out. Just be careful to not scrape the turbo housing up too bad. The silencer ring then will come right out.

The only advantage would be more noise, and only if you like noise. It is there to smooth the airpflow path. The change is that you will get a little less air into the engine.

One end of the ring will have a more bevelled edge than the other. If you can tell which is which. Pry it out from the more bevelled end-- you'll be able to get a better bite on the ring. Once you unseat the one end, use a second flathead and pry further. If turbo whine is what you want, this will do it. Though I didn't notice much more whine until I added an open intake--Afe for me.

Now it screams like a jet fighter---love it!

Pretty much nailed it on the head. More noise, nothing for power. It don't open up a secret passage way or nothing. The plate is shaped to direct the airflow, without the plate you can see the pockets in the turbo housing. A good BHAF will open up the noise department for ya if that is what your looking for.

I used two screwdrivers(flat) and go for the notched part of the ring. It is a heavy duty little sucker. Once you get it worked out a bit with the first screwdriver and you have enough space between the ring and the housing you can put your second screwdriver in between the ring and house and slowy work it out alternating your screwdrivers. Just don't nick the turbine wheel.......
