Remote fuel filter install setup
I am thinking about installing a remote fuel filter on the frame rail for easy access to change and better filtration. Has anyone done this? The setup up i have right now is a fass pump running up to the stock Fuel filter housing, then a big line kit from the fuel filter to the VP. My fass pump does not have the built in filters. I am thinking of running from the fass pump to a filter mounted on the frame rail, then from the filter on the frame rail up to the vp44. Any pics or write ups or insight would be helpful, thanks
Might think of installing it before your FASS pump so it will filter fuel going into it and prolong its life. Racor actually made the ones for Navistar that were put on the original naturally aspirated 7.3L. My old furd had close to 300k on it when I let it go, and it's still going, original IP. This pic of my current setup on my 5.9L.
I ran an Amsoil bypass dual setup on mine. I built a frame that I secure with the battery hold down. It makes the eng compartment a little tight but changing the filters is a snap and it keeps things up out of harms way. Since the bypass and full flow filters are 9+" long they would have been hanging below the frame if I mounted them under the truck. Pics should be accessable in my profile.

Thanks for the info. Are you guys running the filter before the lift pump in order to help exetend the life of the lift pump by running cleaner fuel through it? Are you guys still using the stock fuel filter in these setups? Thanks
here is my setup
click the link, it's the 4th picture. description of location is below pic after you click on the thumbnail.
the pic shows a perma cool filter/water sep but it wouldn't stop leaking so i switched to a CAT ir-0749.
this summer i plan on adding a bracket to allow for another filter to be mounted in the same location so i can add a water separator. i will then delete the stock canister/housing
furthermore - i am also toying with the idea of mounting a 3rd filter (spin-on type) in the spot the stock canister comes off. looks very easy to do with a piece of 3" angle iron. end result will be:
fuel tank - 20 mic water separator - 2 mic filter - mitusa pump - 2 mic filter - vp44
might be a little much , but it's easy and relatively cheap to do. peace of mind will be great also. i remember reading on here somewhere on a filtration thread that the more times you run fuel thru a filter, even if it's the same filter, the better it gets . . .

Yes to both on mine. Plus after replacing two IP's in two months due to some bad fuel I'm not taking any chances. That's why I opted for the water sensor to get an early warning before it reached the primary stock filter up under the hood. Last time it was too late by the time the light came on.
