Rear end temp
Rear end temp
Anybody here install a temp gauge in their rear end? The rearend in my 03 2500 seems to get very hot. Even when not towing but especially when towing the housing of the rearend is very warm to the touch. Sometimes to the point of not being able to keep my hand on it. The fluid is full. Also when the thing gets hot I get a lot of chatter when turning. I added some friction modifier but it still heats up and chatters after an hour or so on the road. I want to install a gauge to keep an eye on it. So has anyone done this?
Rear diffs do get hot - its a cost of doing business. I don't think its a problem til it really burns your hands. There have been number threads on this in the past.
Your 3rd gen has American Axles in it and not Dana's, and AAM doesn't call for any friction modifier for thier diffs.
But yes, you can purchase aftermarket diff covers threaded for a thermocouple and keep an eye on it. I'd spend the cash on engine guages and not worry to much about diff temps.

I thought I remember reading somewhere that trannys see temps around 150*-200*and differentials around 250*. That would be really warm to the tounch on the outside of the housing.
Rear end ok
Well I took the truck to the dealer today. Tech said the fluid looked clear and showed no signs of scorching. They added some friction modifier and said it is good to go. He stated they have no info on what is acceptable temps for the AAM axle. As long as the fluid is not burnt it is ok. He also suggested that at the 30,000 miles service I switch to synthetic fluid since I plan to tow my Travel Trailer with the truck.
They also performed two recall fixes while I was there that I had no idea about. Evidently the recalls went out 16 Feb 04. One deals with an electrical connector and the other a tranny line. My truck is an 2003 with a 47RE tranny.
