Rear Crank Seal

Is this the rear crank seal, or is there something else behind the adapter plate?

Ok figured it out that it's the crank seal. Thanks for all the help

Anyone install one of these without the "special" seal driver?

Never changed one, but the crank MUST be clean and dry. Do not lubricate the seal. Any oil under the teflon seal will cause seal failure in short order.

Seal installation tool should come with the seal. If you take out the adapter plate, there is the seal housing behind it that is 8 or 10 bolts and remove it.

Is that a picture of your truck? Did you clean it before hand? If not, I wouldn't touch that seal.

Yup that's my truck. I wiped it down a bit. The seal is weaping a little bit though it doesn't show in the picture very good. If it were easy to get too, I wouldn't bother, but I don't want to have to pull the trans back out for it in the future.

Got it in there, wasn't too bad, though I should have just pulled the adapter plate and done it that way. I didn't know about it till I had already bought the seal and didn't want to make another trip up to Boise just to get the retainer plate gasket.

The seal I bought actually came with the gasket for the seal housing.

What I got had the crank seal, install sleeve and 2 drivers. There was a thick white one I'm not sure what it was for. Was labeled "rear gear train engines"

I believe the 4 cylinder ISB's as well as the industrial engines use the geartrain at the rear of the engine instead of the front like the automotive ones.
