A question on lubricity.......
After reading the post's on Amsoil I am a bit worried I have not lubed my truck like I should. I have basically followed the owners manual for schedule A maintenance. I have 20k on my 02' (this is in one year) and had the oil changed 2x. Once at 7.5k and once at 15k. 22.5k is just around the corner so I plan on getting back in soon. I drive in 50/50 stop and go vs. highway......Don't haul a thing yet.....Minimal offroad. The semi-synthetic they (Dodge) put in at 15k still looks good on the stick. I read about front/rear diffs., tranny, transfer and of course CTD..........with my statistics, can someone reccomend a good routine to cover all the above.

I didn't think anyone fell into the Maintenance Schedule A? I would be changing the oil at least every 4K, unless your using Amsoil, then around 10K I would just swap filters and top it off.

Everyone has a preference when you talk lube. I change every 5-6k miles with Valvoline and Stratapore (spelling?) filters. I've checked the front differential, changed the rear with Valvoline 80-90w and two bottles of additive. Been working for me, and I tow some heavy stuff every now and again. Personally I think the money for high dollar synthetics is not worth the money but some guys swear by the stuff. These motors will run for 400,000 plus miles with regular oil changes so I dont see where synthetics is needed unless your in a real cold climate.

I'm with KATOOM, I don't think the cost of synthetic oil for the crankcase can be justified, unless you're cold cranking often in sub-zero weather. If the stuff cost, say twice as much as conventional oil, then maybe. But at 3-5 times the price of over-the-counter readily available petroleum lubes, no.
However, in transmissions and differentials, WHERE COMBUSTION DOES NOT TAKE PLACE, I think the benefits of synthetic lubes can be had, and their expense can be justified with extended drain intervals.
The Cummins is a clean machine. With a sump capacity of nearly 3 gallons, even conventional oil should hold "tolerance" a long time. IF using a good quality filter such as a Fleetguard Stratapore, extended drain intervals shouldn't be a problem, unless driven very hard.

Thanks for the tips everybody, as I said, so far I have been pretty easy on my truck......haven't pulled a thing but that will change soon...I hope. Got my eye on a lot of toys. Fer now, I may just go up on a loggin' trail in the mountains, chain up a good sized tree, and drag it around fer a bit!
