Question on fuel filter change?

I have done a search on this but haven't found an answer. I hope this isn't re-hashing an old topic, but here I go. I have done 1 fuel filter change since I have had my truck. I bought it used and I looked at the service records and it was due for a fuel filter change. Well I didn't want to pay a dealer to change it so I did it myself. Really easy to do, but I didn't have any diesel around to put in the fuel filter canister so I just bump the starter about 3 times and let the lift pump run. Started just fine. My question is would it be alright to fill the fuel filter canister with Power Service so I don't have to bump the starter so many times to fill the filter canister? I have read on here that some people think Power Service and other additives are mainly diesel fuel and I always have Power Service around because I use it at every fill up. I never have fresh diesel fuel around the house and was looking for an alternative to this. If adding power service is not an option then I guess I will keep doing it the same way I did the first time.

Thanks for all the help.

Are you unable to get it to start right up? I've never even had to "bump the starter".

I'd say just keep doing it that way, that's what most of us do.

I've never done this, but I recall reading right on a LUCAS additive label that they actually recommend taking of your fuel filter and filling it with pure Lucas additive to clean out your injector system or something like that.

I didn't have any problems starting my truck after the filter change. I did a search on this subject and when I found the procedure it said to bump it a couple of times to allow the lift pump to fill the canister. So I did that and had no problems. Just thought adding power service directly into the canister would reduce the number of times I needed to bump the starter and also assist in cleaning and lubing the injectors.

Thanks for all the replys.

fuel filter change

The things to consider are the differance between the two. How they burn there was an article in TDR awhile ago that said ATF burned hotter so not to fill the filter with it although I think the gent said it was fine to use. TDR also said it was better or recommended to bump starter. I would just bump the starter 3 or 4 times and fill the filter and system.

The big thing I think is ONLY buy clean diesel that way changing fuel filter isn't needed NEARLY as often. I have never had water or particles in the filter ( other then a few paint chips last one) I have always done this and I change filters every other year because on inspection there a little black. Mind you if the engine produced the power it SHOULD, I MIGHT change it more often.
