I installed a new LP from cummins on my dad's 99 last sunday. Having put several LP's on my truck from NAPA and I was quite suprised in the difference of the 2 pumps. Cummins was heavier and better built.<br><br>I believe that there is a difference in the pumps--- my thinking here is that the Carter sells to cummins for our diesel trucks where as Carter sells to Napa for upgrading from mech. to electric pump mainly for gas engines.<br><br>Anyway, <br>old lp 6.5 idle<br>new lp 13.5 idle<br>My dad was quite happy with the new LP ( he thought old one was just fine). I left him a whole bunch of printed pages from KDP threads and the 2 types of fixes and of course pictures for bedtime reading.

 

I also have the 99. I believe my lift pump is starting to fade,do have the latested cummins part #? Thank you in advance Al Mendes.

Frequently Needed Part Numbers

 

Just curious guys; about how many miles was it that you changed the LP. I'm concerned about my truck. It has 31,500mi. and have noticed a slight drop in fuel mileage (from 19.5mpg to 17.2mpg) It could just be winter time fuel. I have little loss of power. How tough is it to put a fuel pressure gauge on the truck?<br><br>Thanks,<br>Benny

 

Changed mine at 101000, was down to 7 and 0. Hope I didn't wait too long and damage the IP. Sure couldn't tell it by the way it runs if I did.
New one was 17 and 12 new, and has dropped to about 12 and 9 already in 20,000 miles.
Can you say pusher pump set up?

My dad has just over 200K and is on LP#3 and on #2 IP. <br>[/quote]

 

Just changed my LP at 36,500 on a 2001.5

 

Mine went out at 26000 would not have known if I hadn't <br>checked with fuel pressure gauge. :'(

 

Mien was the same Ol Ratlr. Mine was at 8 and 0 with 20,000. New LP was 13 and 6. Holley Black is 16 and 13. ;D

 

Hate to add fuel to the fire, but.....<br><br>After finally getting gauges installed, I discovered that LP was @ 12 idle, 7-8 cruise, and I could draw to 3psi @WOT. Truck is @ 15k miles. Scheduled appointment. Tech determines that my gauge is faulty, as his reads more. Replaces pump anyway.<br><br>Pressures are now 1/2 psi higher across the board. My test gauge confirms my readings. It also confirms the pressures on another truck, with a properly functioning pump. Somehow I don't think that my gauge is the problem. I will, however, be checking with yet another test gauge just to make certain that I'm right when I return to discuss this matter with them.<br><br>Good thing that my -8 adapters are on the way, cause it looks like I will be needing them to install my own preferred flavor of pump.<br><br>Who needs warranty service like that?

 

Some of you have probably heard of my lift pump problems and trying to find a dealership that would/could do something about it. <br> Just for a recap,,, the original lift pump was reading about 12psi @ idle,, 10psi @ 65mph cruise,, and 6-7psi @ WOT when I installed my FP gauge over a year ago. Last fall, the readings dropped to 10 @ idle,, 7-8psi @ 65mph cruise,, and 5psi @ WOT. After getting the run-around at the dealer where I purchased the truck new and finally being told by their new service advisor (The dealership had changed owners after I bought my truck),,, &quot;The only specs we have to go by are 10-12 @ idle and 5-7 cranking and your truck is fine,,,,, besides, even if your lift pump was bad,,, it is NOT covered under the 5year/100k warranty&quot; &gt; Needless to say, I knew that I had read and even seen with my own eyes, people getting these pumps changed under warranty! <br> I ended up taking a 50 minute drive down to the Starr Motors Dodge dealership in Suffolk, VA. The service advisor listened to my explanation of my problem, ran my VIN number into the computer and informed me that if the testing showed that the pump needed replacing,,,, it would be covered under warranty. (It took her less than 5 minutes to give me the information that the other dealer couldn't/wouldn't find after over a month!) I had them check it (which took about 20 minutes), and the tech said it needed replacing. They did have to order the pump and it took about 45 minutes to install it. The part number on the invoice is 5080885-AA. My readings now are 14.5-15 @ idle,, 13-13.5 @ 65mph cruise and 10-11 @ WOT. ;D ;D<br> The bottom line is that you have two options. If your truck is under warranty and you can find a decent dealer with a knowledgable staff, then let them do it. If not,,, buy the lift pump from Cummins and install it yourself. I was just about ready to install one myself, when I found the Top Notch people at Starr Motors. Can you guess where I will go to buy my next truck? ;D

 

Has anybody compared or observed or made any conclusions when comparing a LP from NAPA and one from Cummins. Both are made by Carter but I think they are 2 different pumps.

 

i'm fortunate to have 1 of cummins corp. offices within 15 minutes of my house with lots of cummins tech's on hand..i talked with them on the issue of the cummins lp versus a napa aftermarket and they strongly suggested the cummins lp ( they said much better made?!?!? ) they seem to be sincere and somewhat unbiased and very into their work.. they cost $185.00 over the counter and are located in Bristol, PA.

 

Thanks for the info Barracuda <br>Having both pumps in front of me at the same time and giving them a lookover- inside and out- I really couldn't tell a difference but their weight's were very different. I didn't out them on a scale. The 1 from cummins was heavier I just don't know why ???<br><br>I will not but another pump from NAPA unless in an emergency situation.<br><br>My dad's pump is doing great. Now I just need to send him his bill for my labor
