Pulling bottom end?
Pulling bottom end?
Hi,
I have a 98 24v that I has a spun bearing.
Is it possible to pull the bottom end apart without removing the engine.
I installed a BD exhaust brake and was testing it out at about 50 mph with no load in truck and my engine spun a bearing
, any body heard of this before?
Thanks,
Rich

How do you know it spun a bearing? If in fact it did i am sure the crank and rod will need work or replacement. So if the spun bearing is the case you might as well pull the motor. And no spun bearings are not common.
To my knowledge, there is virtually no way to accurately diagnose a spun bearing unless the bearing, cap and seating areas are adequately inspected which obviously means a complete disassembly.
I have a never heard of a 5.9 CTD spinning a main or rod bearing.....from my experience, I would have to agree with nitrousn and say that it is definitely NOT a normal occurance.
How did you come to the conclusion that a bottom end bearing has spun?....and what does using an exhaust brake have to do with spinning a bearing? I'm not trying to give you a hard time - I'm just very curious.

i constantly use my exhaust brake, empty or loaded, high speed or slow. an exhaust brake will not cause a spun bearing.
if you are hearing a horrible noise, it may be a valve. the 2nd gen trucks need upgraded,60 lb, exhaust springs so the valves stay shut and not strike the piston. unless you changed the springs, there's your problem. it is very unlikely you spun a bearing, these bottom ends are bulletproof, most sled pullers dont even touch the bottom, and they do WAY more abusive stuff than an e-brake can dish out.
good luck.

I use my EB ALL the time - empty or loaded.....there really isn't much need for service brakes when using the EB empty.
98.5 - 02 24v's do not require heavier exhaust valve springs as the OEM's are adequate.
