The second gen trucks require power steering fluid, unlike the third gens which require ATF+4. Redline, Amsoil, and Royal Purple carry synthetic power steering fluids that may intrest you.

I had problems with the pump groaning and grumbling when cold (under 40) and now it's fine with Lucas ps fluid.

Been running Royal Purple Max EZ for a while now. No complaints, it works very well!

The PS fluid is one of the most neglected fluids. Because of that, its not uncommon to read about steering and braking issues in cold weather. Since the PS pump also powers the brakes too. Changing over to synthetic PS fluid will not only cure any issue (except something major) but it will also make your PS a lot smoother as well. I found some Redline PS fluid and bought a cheap plastic hand pump w/hose that reached down deep in the pump so that I could suck out most if not all of the old fluid. I pumped out about a litter and then refiled with the Redline, drove it a mile or two and then did it again. Some guys claim that a turkey baster works but I couldn't get it to reach far enough.

What a turkey!

On my '98.5,I used a turkey baster and evacuated the reservoir 6-8 times over a week or so. Each time I replaced the fluid w/Valvoline Synthetic PS fluid. It came out great. I could definitely feel the improvement. Read about it on another forum. It's calculated to exchange 90% of the fluid with no disconnecting or priming. 1 1/2 bottles did the job.
