2002.5 2500 4x4

1st LP 80,000Km (i'm canadian )
2nd LP & 1st VP44 100,000km
3rd LP very soon @ idle 4psi, but having dealer probs right now

Everything changed under warrenty
Replaced with stock parts
I live Toronto where in a year the temp goes from -40C to +35C
both pumps were changed in winter
Unknown reason for failures

I personally think its a combination of things with the LP, I think 1st the diesel fuel up here in canada sucks theres too many additives cause when i change my fuel filter theres a white sludge on it so that doesn't help the VP44 either, 2nd the heat and vibration from the engine really doesn't help the matter and 3rd the pump is ment to push not pull. but this is IMO

GOOD GOD, reading this entire post just makes you want to shoot the person behind the engineering of this CRAP!!! It's truly amazing to see how many people are having this problem, yet nothing has been done that really fixes this stupid problem. LP's aren't too bad when coming down to replacing them costing around $200 bucks, but VP$$ costing between $1k and $2K.........................that is just plain male cow poop!! So far I've been lucky and haven't had to replace anything on mine and it has 87K miles on it ( of course the original owner might have though?!?!?!) I really really love my truck and I have been extremely happy with it, but crap like this kinda makes me leary about it in some ways!!! Guess I better look into all of those credit card offers I get in the mail, sooner or later I might need one of those suckers!!

Original LP (and it's still strong)

Steady diet of fuel filters, and Stanadyne PF

Just my opinion, but I believe the percentage of people you're seeing here with an LP or IP problem is skewed. Many people joined this forum because they needed an answer to a problem, so the results are weighted in that direction.

Here's my history.

At 59,000 miles the first VP44 was history.

At 130,000 miles, the second VP44 was history.

Two LPs between the failures, and fuel pressure was monitored. Now I'm going to add 2 cycle to every tank.

If it fails again, the TRUCK is history.

Purchased my truck new in March 2002. Current mileage is 68,000.

Here's my history: ( note - prices exclude 8.25% sales tax)

LP 09/05; 33,079 miles; cost $160-$170 at Cummins; 6 month warranty
chose not to have dealer replace under warranty.

Installed mechanical fuel pressure gauge in the cab.

LP 04/06; 37,100 miles; cost $160-$170 at Cummins; 6 month warranty
Moved new LP to frame rail using Vulcan 3/8ths reloaction kit; replaced all banjo bolts with Vulcan fittings. Replaced all fuel hard lines with diesel rated 3/8ths id hose.

LP 11/06; 46,710 miles; cost $199 at NAPA; 12 month warranty.

LP 10/07; 56,195 miles; warranty replacement from NAPA.

10/08, Installed Vulcan 3/8ths draw straw in hopes of prolonging life of LP's and VP44.

Aug. 2008 DTC P0216 popped up; started having dead pedal issues. No problem with APPS.

02/18/09; bought IP, getting ready to install myself. Cost $1,495 plus tax.
One year warranty on IP. Warranty invalid if pump fails due to water or gas contamination. I have no worries about the gas - just the moisture.
Also bought new LP to install with IP. The current LP is working fine even though it's 15 months old.

Fuel filters have been changed at one year intervals whether needed or not. Have used diesel fuel additives, i.e. Amsoil Diesel Concentrate, Power Service or Stanadyne since day one. Apparently a waste of money.

Bottom line, I should have unloaded this truck many moons ago - would have saved myself some serious money.

2002 2500 new 8-1-2001 current miles 108,000
VP44 replaced 7-2005 65,000 warranty
Lift pump replaced 9-2008 103,000. To repair 68.00. I watched it slowly die for 2 years. Cummins carter campaign pump I bought several years back. Fuel filters changed 15,000 to 18,000 miles. No additives dont believe in them.

Bought the truck used with 56,000 on the clock,,,,,, in the glove box was a reciept from Dodge where they had replace the IP and LP at about 40 to 45 thousand miles,,,,, called the original owner and he told me he'd run it out of fuel and smoked the IP and LP.

So I basically started out with a new system, at 92,000 miles and in the middle of evacuation from hurricane Ike, poof at a red light, hesitates, dead pedal, white smoke, the whole nine yards,,,,,,, kept running though, just no power.

Lift pump was fine, had 15 psi at idle and lost very little at WOT, but I replaced both with the deal from Pennsacola diesel,,, new IP with a Air Dog 100 for $1395.00,

I love the Airdog, steady fuel pressure at 15 psi, and the IP is good also we'll see how long it lasts, but so far so good.

I bought this truck new - 1999 3500.
VP44 went out at maybe 6 years and 140,000 miles. Stopped for fuel and truck would not start so I think the computer went out. The repair was 2 grand at the dealership.

Before it went out I had no idea what a VP44 was.
I'd like to say that this is a great truck and I would be willing to replace the vp every 140,000 miles, but lets hope I dont need to.

Bought mine new in Feb 01, 0 km truck, all km since new, I have put on

since feb 2001, 232,000km

10 stock lift pumps, all covered under the basic warranty, or the 1 year from date of purchase warranty. Since the last one made it past the 12 months, I have put on the GFS392 Glacier system, and had 2 walbro failures. rest of system is good however, and YES, it does have a pre-filter.

6 vp44 pumps. directly attributed to fuel supply. All but one were mechanical failures in the pumping apparatus. Only 1 of the 6 was paid for out of pocket, the rest never made it out of their respective warranty period. Hoping to change that statistic this time.

Always filled with clean, properly filtered fuel from commercial supply ( gas station or cardlock ) tanks. Always running fuel conditioner in recommended amounts, as well as ashless 2-stroke oil for added lubrication.

Truck runs in temps from -65C to +40C, nice broad range of temps and conditions.

Having tried everything in my power to increase the service life of the pumps, I have given it over to a bad design. At some point, I may come up with something better for a LP setup, but the IP is something we are stuck with.

I guess I need to knock on wood then. At the 200K mile mark on my original vp44. I am going to replace it this spring though. Got some long trips to take towing, not pushing it.

2001 2500, bought used with 270.000Kms on the clock,in May 07 I'm the third owner, 2nd owner said he bought if from a family member and that it was still on the factory LP and IP, I replaced the LP with a campain pump from cummins after seeing the orginal LP would drop to 0psi at WOT (drove it like this for at least 40,000 just did not know it) In march 08 I installed a IP from tabor diesel (Midwest) I replaced a perfectly good VP only because I was unsure of its condition and I use the truck for a living and did not want to risk having it go out and leave me stranded.
A week later I added an Airdog. Earlier in the year (Jan I think) I had to replace the Airdog(kept blowing a fuse)
I use Amsoil or 2stroke with every tank, and I fill up every 2days and have for the past 2yrs. I average 5000-6000kms a month. Engine runs 8-10hrs a day so the true mileage is actually higher, I now have 420,000kms on the truck

From nov 07-nov 08 had an edge EZ
from Nov 08 to present The pump has been tapped
