Possible dead peddle
Possible dead peddle
I read quite a few posts about dead peddle and I have those symptons but not the things that seem to lead up to them. I have always had fuel pressure. I am on my 3rd lift pump relocated to the frame with the Vulcan kit. Every time my fuel pressure dropped below 7, I changed my lift pump...on my dollar...although I am still under warranty...they always said they couldnt repeat the problem I was experiencing under their test drive. I have EGT, Boost, and fuel pressure gauges. I asked if they noticed the low pressure...they told me me low pressure was fine as long as the flow was ok. I asked if the flow test was ok, and they never checked.
Anyway, recently the boost needle has been jumping around at any boost over 15 psi...but now I am getting the dead peddle thing. Cruise set running 70 mph..suddenly...dead..no throttle....push the peddle, nothing...let off push again and it is fine. May be fine for 30 seconds or 30 minutes...varies greatly. I reset the apps tonight but I don't really think that is going to fix it. It is really noticeable while towing. Harder to show up when empty, but it does happen. I checked the codes tonight and got P1693, P0216, P0602.
Oh yeah, while this is happening, the EGT's seem to be higher now than ever before. And today's temperatures have been in the mid to high 90's, Could the weather play a part in the symptons? I am leaving for the beach in 2 weeks and pulling a camper. I am really thinking I should get this done ASAP.

diesel
hey man im not trying to act like i know <edit> about cummins. but i will tell you my sister who has a 03 QC 4X4 dually started experiencing the dead pedal at 68,000 miles an she bought her truck with 28,000miles on it.. she has had all the fluids changed on time, an has done everything right.
i just bought a 01 cummins my first diesel ever an 2 weeks after driving the truck im experiencing alot of dead pedal. an the previous owner of my truck had the dealer install a brand new factory IP, which was changed out 2 years ago when he had alot of water in his fuel.
i dont know what to say really, i just keep reading on this site an try to take in as much as possible.

update
Called the dealer....luckily I am under warrantly 60 months - 100,000 miles. Taking it in Wednesday for diagnostics. However I am expecting the "we can't find anything wrong" call from the technician. I guess when they see the codes it will be quite obvious. I told them not to do anything until calling.
Sorry, but:
P0216 (M) Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure
High fuel supply restriction, low fuel pressure or possible wrong or incorrectly installed pump keyway.
Mine did the same things. Dead pedal in Cruise, so I didn't use cruise for months. Then it started to do it nearly everytime I held sustained RPMs. Had 14.7 at idle, and 12 @ 2500 in 5th.
Anyway, New LP and VP. Put on the Vulcan 1/2" line kit adn relo'd the LP to frame rail as soon as it got home from the Cummins shop.

I'm new to this forum...so I hope I am doing this right...
I am also experiencing the dead pedal again on my 2001 2500. A few months ago I thought it might have been the tranny, so I had some of the sensors replaced and it took care of the dead pedal for a week or so. Then I installed the Edge Juice with Attitude and found out that my fuel pressure was about 4-6 psi so I replaced the lift pump and that seemed to take care of some of the dead pedal issues but they recently started coming back. In the past I have also tried the APPS reset and that will take care of it for a day or so.
Now that I have the guage kit, when I get the dead pedal, I am not getting any boost from the turbo 0-3 psi and then pumping the pedal a few times, the boost will jump to arround 15 psi and the dead pedal is gone but when it comes back...no boost again and it has been happening several times a day now.
So for my dead pedal issue, it seems that it might be a problem with the turbo not spooling up and the exhaust gasses not being able to exhaust themself.
Now I have to figure out why...any ideas?

oh no
Sorry to report that dead pedal on my truck has always led to IP replacement. The last one I installed myself in about 5 hrs. It is a Blue Chip pump with 'FedEx' electronics, and no more problems. I also installed a second lift pump on the frame and run 17 to 29 lbs of fuel pressure all the time now. Remember, these pumps depend on fuel flow for lubrication and cooling. Low pressure is low volume and poor cooling & lube which leads to inturnal pump damage. The symtom is blowby and loss of pressure or 'dead pedal'. Taking your foot off the gas, resets the computer controlled pump, only to have it fail again, when up to full pressure again. This will not go away if your pump has been damaged due to low input pressure.

I think you need a new VP.

I always had pressure, always. And I always run Stanadyne every tank. When I got dead peddle I had 14.2 lbs pressure. Boost was around 5 psi. When the peddle came back it may run fine for 10 seconds or 10 minutes. When I checked the temp, by feel, of the electronics cover on the VP44...it was too hot to keep your hand on. Could it just be the electronics overheated?
Latitude,
This sounds very familiar. Just this week I got the dead pedal for the first time- cruise on about 65mph highway and nothing. I took it to the dealer and after one day I called them and the guy was more worried about if I "had a chip" than looking for the problem. I of course set it to stock settings (Superchips) before I took it in and he got code 1694 told me pressures are fine and of course fixed nothing. I am also leaving for 700 mile beach trip in one week pulling the trailer. I have not had the problem since but it looks like its only a matter of time.

The truck is still at the dealer but the service guy i talked to knew exactly the symptons and although he didnt say it was the injection pump, he did say he had to report a code before replacing the injection pump. He also said that since they were now replacing the lift pump with the intake pump that they were not seeing any VP problems....I told him that I have had a guage since about 2,000 miles and the pressures are fine when the dead peddle hits. I had also taken it to them twice for low fuel pressures...below 7 psi...both times they said it was fine that flow was important not pressure. At least I have a record of trying to get them to check the low pressure condition. If it died from low pressure, they knew about it. Just waiting around to hear something.
Back from the dealer....Could not duplicate the problem...imagine that. They did say that the overboost code was coming from the elbow orifice (yes he said orifice) in the turbo being to large....I have no clue what he was talking about. I asked what boost the ECM defuled at...he said it didnt. I said are you sure? He said that many times people would change the elbow to raise boost to get more performance. Again I asked, if the ECM defuels because of overboost, why try to get more boost. He said he agreed since the truck just cut the fueling back when it detected overboost, I asked at what PSI did this happen. He said he has never seen more than about 15 psi on any of the trucks. I said oh really...how about we go for a ride and I can show you 25 PSI right now. He said yeah because the aftermarket boost elbow. I said ok lets go to the parts department and get the FACTORY elbow, I will put it in and then we can go for a ride. I guarantee you I can get 25 PSI with the FACTORY elbow. I asked to talk to the regional rep because I brought the truck in for dead peddle and the technician is stuck on a brass elbow. I think he figured out that I wasn't going to be fooled by his imcomplete knowledge of these trucks. Thanks to DTR I was educated enough to know he was pulling the wool over my eyes, but I was polite the entire time. I also asked if they could check to see if the electronics on the pump was bad and they said no, the only way they could check was if the ECM had a code. So I told them I will be back on Monday with the code stored in the ECM. He said the regional rep would have to look at it since I had guages and an exhaust. I asked do you think those things may have caused my problems........I told him to call me when the rep comes as I would like to talk to him also. So back at square one.
Well things are getting better...I called the Dealership that I bought the truck from...They are a DODGE TRUCK dealer, not minivans...I talked to the service manager and he said no problem bring it in, but he wanted me to talk to the service technician. So after talking to him, I am much happier to report that not only did he totally agree that it was the injection pump, he had them in stock and could replace it within 2 hours. I told him I had a 4" exhaust and gauges and he said those were good to have and it sounded like I was doing everything I could to prevent the failure. I also asked if the code had to be present for the warranty work...he said it is better to have it, but they have replaced so many that Dodge knows there is a problem and they are not arguing warranty work. This technician was very helpful and very informed and could not believe the issues I was having with the other dealer...oh yeah I told him I was having problems with fuel pressure so I took it upon myself at my cost to move the lift pump to the rail and install larger fuel lines. He asked what pressures I was seeing and I said 13 to 15 all the time..he laughed and said the new in tank pump was only pushing 8psi at idle...imagine at WOT. He thought that the pressures were fine and that some pumps are just destined to fail. Mine at least made it 45,000 miles. I hope this goes well.
Wow this sucks, I just got home from a road trip and I was going to post a thread on this topic because in the last week I have had these exact symptoms
It has acctually been happening for about 6 months now. It only seems to do it once the truck has been running for awhile. The only code I have is a 1693.
The truck only has 60,000 km on it and has always had good fuel pressure.
So would this most likely be the electronics failure? Is there any way to test it to be sure?
