I'm interested as long as there is a VP44 on my truck

Scratch that, I am VERY INTERESTED as long as I keep the VP

Maybe you could just entice me to keep the VP if its worth it.

Write some software that changes tables through a picture of you sliding the plate and adjusting the AFC on a 12V LOL

That's funny, I was thinking that on the way home from the store

What has been done so far

The major identified parameters (maps you can modify):
  • Configuration - Torque limit @ RPM (sets base for engine output)
  • Torque Limit - throttle position/RPM - Absolute max. output for a given RPM/APPS setting
  • Torque Limit - Manifold pressure/RPM (AFC table)
  • Torque Limit - Barometric pressure/RPM (High altitude fuel limiter)
  • Timing - Load/RPM (Base timing)
  • Timing - Cold engine adjustment (Tables for IAT and CTS)
  • Timing - Light Load advance (advance timing at low boost condition)

Engine output is increased by raising the limits in the various torque limit tables. These work with each other, the software will take the lowest number of all the tables, so increases in one must be made in the others.

There are others, some identified, and some which are only used for certain configurations (automatic trans, etc.). I have only worked with the files for the 2001 HO engine, because that's what I have. All the others are very similar, and I have the files, so I will have definitions available for them too.

On my truck, I have modified the base timing, the configuration torque limit and the APPS/RPM torque limit, the AFC table, and the Barometric Pressure table.

There is a BIG difference in the truck now - I can make it 'smoke on demand' if I want to. The throttle is responsive, not touchy. It is much more fun to drive. I haven't gone too far with it because I need a boost elbow. 19PSI doesn't cut it anymore.

No boost fooler needed because I removed the limiter.

There are a ton of other configurable parameters, I am still going through the identification process. Along the way I might even be able to figure out how to get past the 3250/3500RPM limiters.

If you figure this out thru the ECM, you WILL have a product. This is something guys have wanted the smarty to do for years but to no avail.

Why the need for more than 3500rpm from these trucks? Maybe for a puller, but 80% of the performance diesel market does NOT need that kind of rpm.

Not just pulling but for drag racing also. Also that 20% is a major buying power. Ever heard of the 80/20 rule in marketing?

If/when I figure out how to make it past 3500RPM, someone's going to have to volunteer to test the thing out. I don't have the necessary mods to do it, and if I blow my truck up, it's going to be a very long time before I'd be able to get back to work on this project!

I want to lower my idle speed to about 600rpm. Have you found that table yet?

Sounds like a really interesting project. You say you can smoke on demand, what about power with your changes? Does it run comparable to a non-tap box?

I can't say because I have never had any boxes on my truck, nor have I driven any trucks other than my own. It feels much different, though. The power comes on much earlier.

There's not a ton of smoke, once the boost comes up the smoke almost goes away and it puts you back in your seat a little. I'm sure more can be done with a little more time spent tuning it. The changes I made for testing were a quick 'hack'.

Nothing new right now, work keeps getting in the way of things! I'll probably be spending a bit of time 'cleaning up' the reflashing protocol stuff and getting the definitions done for the flash files for years other than '01.

Then, I need to get a pyrometer installed before I can do any more testing of my own.

if you need a auto to test with let me know.i ran a ecm for a manual trans truck and the low end power was great.less torque management i guess.the only problem was the idle surged pretty bad.I have the auto ecm back on it.
