Possible alternator problem

I have a 1999 2500 with the 24V CTD. Yesterday morning on the way to work, I got a momentary check gages light and noticed the volt meter was just to the right of the first line on the left. I am having a "Senior Moment", but I remember it normally running further to the right. All the other gages, tach, etc. are working normally. Truck is running fine. Until I read other posts, I assumed the alternator had died, now I am not sure. Batteries are almost new and are both reading 12.5V after driving the truck about 80 miles. Is there a procedure to see any codes that may have been thrown. We are presently about 45 miles from any civilization in western WY. Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks beforehand.

Dennis

Measure electrical system voltage when the engine is running, you should have over 14v.

Charging varies with temperature from about 12.6 in extremely hot weather to about 14.6 in very cold weather. This is normal as it varies according to the efficiency requirements of the battery's lead-acid chemistry.
