Pinion nut size for a D80?
Ok, I know this has been covered here many times but the search function is disabled at the moment and the google search turned up nothing......
So, I found out the rear axle yoke is smoked on my 3500 - the u-joint is flopping around in it with the straps tight!.........I need to replace the yoke asap.......can someone remind me what the pinion nut size is?........I have to borrow the socket from one of the mantenance mechanics at work.........thanks guys.....

I'm not sure that it doesn't take a special socket. The reason I say this is that the shop that installed my South Bend Con OFE clutch mentioned that the pinion seal was weeping slightly and asked if I wanted them to change it out while they had the driveshaft out. Long story short - they couldn't because a standard socket had walls that were too thick to fit inside the yoke if the nut size was correct. When the Snap-On truck came by, they tried every socket in the truck but couldn't get one to fit, so I told them not to worry about it.
Now, someone may come back and say a standard socket works fine, but I'm just relating the story I got from the folks at this shop who have always been straight shooters with me.

You are correct Rusty, a standard impact socket will not work but a non impact chrome socket does work.......I have machined down the end of an impact socket for a friends 4x4 shop that does a lot of D60 work but they don't work on D80's much......
Anyone know the size of the pinion nut???

For anyone that cares to know, the pinion nut socket size is 1 7/8" and even a non impact socket requires a small amount of machining to turn down the outside diameter slightly to fit in the yoke.
