Overdrive lockout dont work

I am having problems with my OD not locking out on my 99. The light does come on when you start the engine. But it wont engage when your driving to disable the OD. Any Suggestions ? Bad switch ? is there a way to put a toggle on the wires going into the shifter? Kinda lost on this issue.. Thanks

I'd bet the switch is out.

The way that system works is that it's just a momentary contact switch, and when you push it, the PCM toggles off the overdrive circuit and turns on the light.
On your year, the switch, I believe, is a push-button located in the end of the shifter handle. I would expect that a wire has broken in the steering column where it has to flex. You may be able to repair the break, if not, a new overdrive lockout switch will fix it if that is the issue.

Any idea which wires I am looking for under there ? and i assume the whole shifter has to be replaced if the wires aren't broke instead of just a button ?

If you take apart the plastic around the steering column (I remember a few deeply recessed torx screws from the bottom) you will see a pair of I believe black wires, twisted together that go into a small white plug somewhere underneath the column, near the steering wheel. You can get just the switch somewhere, I can't for the life of me remember where. It was posted not too long ago. Could always add a momentary contact switch elsewhere if it's too much of a hassle. Try jumping those wires out (again, momentarily!) a few times with the key on to make sure that's your problem. Good luck.

Found the problem.. Both wires were severed by the plastic cover near the shifter handle. no room to fix it so the button on the shifter controlled it so I put a horn button next to the dash .. works fine now ! thanks
