Over boost.......

Under load (like with my camper on) and accelerating under hard throttle, my boost gauge is showing WELL over 25psi and if I don't let off, will approach 30. TOO MUCH and not normal.
The turbo was replaced about 25 miles ago........

As long as your exhaust gas temps aren't getting too high, it won't hurt it at all.

You said turbo was just replaced, wastegate might have a different setting than the old one. Or you might have had a boost leak at the elbow or back of the compressor housing that the new one doesn't. Either way, 30 psi isn't gonna hurt anything.

Well a factory turbo should be wastegated at no more than about 23PSI. Im guessing your wastegate is out of adjustment, or you have a leak somewhere in your wastegate actuating system. If its a stock turbo try to keep it under 35, or you will be replacing it again... Dont ask me how I know.. what kind of turbo do you have now, stock?

The turbo was replaced about 25 miles ago........
You have a Van Aaken V5 and it has a boost fooler so 35 to 40 psi of boost would be normal.

I was just rereading my original post. what I SHOULD have said was that it was replaced 25000 miles ago!! Geez!!!!

Anyhow, The VanAaken has been on now for 4+ years. The turbo was replaced when I noticed the overboost code and took it to my dealer (under warranty). I added the gauges shortly after and was always in the 23-25 range. As I understand, normal is 18-20. The reason for the replacement was a non-functioning waste gate, stuck partially open. Never making boost at part throttle, never dumping boost when necessary. What i am noticing now (now that I've run the truck with the camper on for a while) is that almost 30 psi is attainable but EGT's are up now. I struggle to keep it under 1000 when I used to be able to cruise along with the camper and an ATV trailer under 1000 without issue (unless working the truck hard).

Well the rig is at the dealer for a checkover. I went thru my papers and found the R/O where they did the turbo R&R. It was about 5 years and 40k miles ago. Will be interested to hear what they find.

Update.....

Dealer called this morning. Said that the ECU isn't throwing up any codes so they can't really diagnose the problem. Said that my VanAaken is fooling the ECU in overboost conditions (duh). The codes are clear. Told me to take the truck, unhook the V5 and drive it some.

So I took it home over lunch and pulled out the box. Came out as easy as it went in - one connector to a diagnostic port under the fuel filter and two between the MAP senor and it's OE connector. I even had the diag port terminator in a baggie in the door pocket, over 4 years! Good for me!

First, 30psi boost is gone. Even at full tilt I was around 24ish.

Second, seat of the pants tells me I'm building boost MUCH sooner now. A glance at the gauges tells me thats true.

I had several hard runs up thru the gears, making all the boost and only APPROACHED 1000 degrees once. Top gear acceleration is much quicker as I can build boost now. Before what seemed to happen is is the engine would lag as temps creeped but boost wouldn't, much. Now, I could accelerate and not push up over 1000 degrees but know why. Because I don't have to keep my foot in it for extended periods of time. I was hitting the higher temps (I think) because the boost wasn't building nearly as quickly and I needed to keep pushing the go pedal down waiting for the truck to pick up speed.

So....... Where are we? The truck SHOULD be back to essentially original configuration with the exception of the BHAF, a 4" turbo-back exhaust. The VP was new last year.

1. I'm not making 30 psi anymore but I AM still over the stock 20, consistently at 23-24 now.

2. Is is possible that my V5 has gone TU? It's over 4 years old now and i know that electronics do go bad from time to time. Of course, VanAaken has gone out of biz so there's no one to contact....

It sounds like the V5 is working properly - I have a XZT+ and if it is on timing and fueling I get high EGT (1200 - 1250) and 30# of boost. If I turn it off I am in the 24# boost range and 150* cooler on EGT.

But the problem I have is that the numbers I was seeing recently WEREN'T normal. 30 psi with this unit was not the norm for the first almost 4 years of it's life...

Have now put 40+ miles on the truck, thru many start stop cycles. I cycled the key 3 times yesterday, all codes are clear....
