Opened up my 24V and this is what I saw..
Here's some pictures of how my truck looks like at the moment.

I thought I had a KDP attack, and a Piston melted. Turned out only to be a really bad blown headgasket, right into an oil port.

The oil from in front of the gear case, where a KDP would crack the case, was only a loose bolt.

Here they are.

This is what it looks like now,,

6 in a row, built to tow,,, note #3 piston is wetter than the others. Maybe a stuck injector?

#3 cylinder on the head. Very suspicous. Oil? Stuck injector? The liquid in the #3 cylinder FELT Like Diesel,, but didn't have too much of a Diesel smell.

Here's a really good picture of the cam gear. You can see the Dowel Pin pretty easy.

Here's the head bolts.
One bolt had some ruse, and another bolt was SEVERLY rusted up. The bolt on the far right is the suspicious bolt, I can't figure out why it's rusted. The bolt was not even moist when I pulled it out of the head, but it was close to the blown oil port passage.

It was not a stuck injector. That much I do know. Oil related carbon there my friend. Merrick what type of injector was that? Im very curious now. It does not appear to be a super mental. I thought you ran super mentals?????

Don~

They are the step above super Mentals. DD made them a little bigger than the Mega Mentals for Stefan K. Last year.
After 20K smokey miles, I have no problem seeing the holes in the injectors. I can see them from 2' away. ;D yah, cool.

Ouch! Lot of work there - and more to come. Glad for you that that it appears to be an easy fix. The gear train looks pretty clean. Is that as it was or did you clean it up at all? What kind of oil are you using using and how often do you change it? What kind of miles on this engine?
Now for some pure theory. You say that the badly rusted bolt was near or next to the blown part of the gasket. It may be possible that this bolt somehow got rusted, was consequently weakened and then stretched a tad. This in turn caused the head gasket to blow.
Personally I would throw away any rusted head bolts and replace them with new.

I didn't clean anything up. The cylinders have some dirt in them from when I was working over them, but the head, and cam gears are all exactly how they look when pulled off.
The picture of the cam gear was taken about 2 minutes after I pulled the cover off.

I think you are correct on the rusted bolt. I hadn't thought about it streytching (getting weaker) after getting rusty, but that, I feel, is a valid point.

Merrick Cummings Jr

The liquid in the #3 cylinder FELT Like Diesel,, but didn't have too much of a Diesel smell."

Internet pics can be deceiving - but the pic of that cylinder certainly LOOKS like there has been significant encroachment of water/oil from adjacent passages - a large portion of where the fire ring SHOULD be is seriously covered by the same mess as the valves next to it... Looks like it had been pretty seriously leaking, and probably for some time...

:'( Man, I'm sorry to hear that. That's a bummer. You're gonna need to rent a truck to get around before it's over. I hope you didn't just procrastinate until the last one broke. :
