One more time.
I posted this a week or so ago in the wrong forum and got only 1 response. So I thought I would try it againg in the right forum.
A friend of mine has a 2000 DRW that has a rough idle, and pressure building in the fuel tank. He checked the codes and got p0216, and p0236. We think the codes are for injection pump timing failure, and map sensor too high too long. We are not sure if this is right. We got the numbers from a book. If this is correct what do we need to do to fix the problem? Thanks

Correct on both codes. Not sure how that relates to pressure building in gas tank but P0216 is usually death nell for VP-44 injector pump.
I had one dying for 6 months.... just ran at lower HP. Only showed up on Dyno. Other than that it ran ok for 20,000 miles. Injector pump acting up can do anything from die as you cruise down hwy, to my example above. Suggest replacing as funds allow!

Pressure building in the tank can be vacuum or pressure,
Vacuum caused by faulty fuel cap or tank vent plugged.
pressure caused by loose connector tubes or loose injector or faulty/damaged copper injector washer
0216 sometimes can also be caused by excessively bubbles in the fuel/ or starved for fuel, confirm fuel pressure to IP, clear codes and see if it returns, likely the pump is wore out and will need replacing, typically you would see excessive smoke on start up and no power till the engine cane up to temp., you might be lucky and milk the VP for a while yet
Edit**just re-read your post, I'd bet on a loose injector (allowing pump pressure to be returned to the tank)causing most of your issues, especially since you mention rough idle

I wanted to give a follow up post on this. We did take the injectors out and found a bad washer on one of the injectors, and we ended up changing the vp 44 also. All is good now. We are thinking with the bad washer the compression was going back through the lines and thats what caused the pressure in the tank and also the death of the pump. Thanks for the help!
Thanks RJ! just lucky I guess. it is nice to see that some folks do post a follow up with their results, it does help others, who are trying to diagnois silimar problems.
The loose/damaged copper washer I believe would not take out the VP, all that happened was the compression from the cyl leaks around the washer and up around the injector, the injector is surrounded by fuel that is returning to the fuel tank, this returning fuel normally helps to cool the injectors, the high pressure from either the cyl or from a loose connector tube will edventually force its way back thru the head and out thru the return line back to the tank. the loose washer would be causing all kinds of hard start issues as well. if you had a 0216 the pump could not achieve all its timing advance, my guess is it was already wore out. Have you guys confirmed LP pressure? or have a fuel pressure gauge installed?
