OK VP44 Time I guess! Tired of no power!
Ive been getting the dead pedal deal too long now. No power on the freeway and can't tow worth a sh_t! I've had the codes in the truck too long now.
Now for a '99 CTD 3500 auto what are my options. I will be doing this myself. I would like to order Monday and get done next weekend.
I search on here and found so much info on the VP44 but no concrete up to date place or updates.
I'm in South Florida!
Do I buy new? Ouch!
Do I get a rebuild or a reman? But from where? How bout cummins directly?
Also all I run is a Diablo Puck for added power. I will be adding injectors for effiency and power, can I put a hot pump for added power?
Where should I focus to buy right and get something good and not get ripped off!!??
Thks! T

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Pensocola Diesel on Ebay has as good deal as anyone. Got mine for 935 at front door. They are all reman built to Bosch specs. Haven't seen any advantage on paying more for the same thing.
There are plenty other places offering same piece. If not sure of LP, replace.

OK I have a 99 auto CTD. Can I get a pump with alittle more power out of it? With out hurting the life of the pump is it possible or do I just order the factory settings. Ive seen 225hp and 235hp and 245hp on same year pump[.
Anyone with knowledge about this?Thks!

Which VP-44
Silver,
I am in south Fla too and just went through this. A year and a half ago my original VP died a violent death at 96k with crud in my fuel. Cleaned tank, lines filter housing etc and bought "cheap" reman pump. What I didn't know was the pump was rebuilt with new parts "as needed". Whatever still worked on the pump was kept like the computer for example. 15,000 miles later the computer went out on my reman pump causing intermittant performance issues like one day run great next day was a dog (never left me stranded just ran like **** and was embarassing to tow with). Fuel was pristine clean and fuel pressure had been maintained at +5 psi or greater the whole time and the re-used
computer went out.
I bit the bullet this time and bought a Blue Chip, Chip is great to talk to and extremely knowledgable. The all new parts like the "upgraded computer" sold me on it and I gladly paid the extra cash for new parts. We each gotta make our own decisions and live with them.
I made mine and am not looking back. Too early to tell about longevity on this pump as only 4,000 mi since replacing but so far so good.

Wow FLA CRACKER! That sounds like my issue. I think getting a good pump is worth it. Getting a new computer in them for sure. I feel your pain on that. Anyway I think I will be calling Pensacola Diesel and Blue Chip to see what they can offer me. I thank you for your detailed advice. Good luck.
Hey did you do the swap yourself? I plan on doing myself. I just dont trust anyone to do any work on my trucks anymore!

Silver,
I am not trying to convince you to buy a blue chip or anybodies pump. Just offering my experiences. How will I ever be 100% shure I made the right choice. To each his own.
As far as the install I have done (2). First one took 4 hours and was a little scary. Second took 2-1/2 hours and was much easier. The install is really not that bad if you have basic tools and know how. A puller (air horn bolts can be used with puller), an inspection mirror to verify the key seats in the gear correctly and basic wrenches etc.
I was going to have a local shop do the first one as I was working 12 hour days 7 days a week at the time. They said they did not have the special tooling required to change a VP-44. I figured if they didn't know any better than that they were not working on my truck and did it myself one night after work. Not too bad and gets easier with familiarity.
