oil pressure sender?
I just moved back to a 2nd gen truck due to being unemployed now. the truck I got the oil pressure gauge goes to 80 psi when the key is turned on and stays there no matter if the truck is running or not. so I am guessing the sending unit is bad. My problem is I have no idea where it is located? second I priced it at 2 different stores and the going price seems to be $200 wow... what makes this so expensive? I know I need to get it replaced but money is tight now, hoping to just be able to find it and check connections and maybe get lucky..lol thanks for any input.. Andy

The cheapest way is to just get a mechanical gage and install it in the ash tray. You will just have to live with the dash gage being non functional. This is what I did. Be sure to use a large enough line to the gage. I used the standard plastic tube and it is too small for the winter time. 3/16 or 1/4 brake line and a rubber hose going thru the firewall works much better.
I think the electric sending unit was about $150 from these guys.

I have a 24 valve and just had to replace mine. Dealer price 380.00 US. Napa 230.00 US Cummins Northwest $130.00 but picked it up and got it for $112.00.
My oil pressure gauge did the same yours did and it threw code 0523 and 1698. Sensor voltage too high. The new sensor fixed this and now I have a much more sensitive gauge. My needle used to stick around 40 all the time. The new sender shows below 40 at idle up to almost the 60 position when cold and accelerating then just above 40 when running at 1800 rpm.

I just had to do mine a couple months ago, it was right at $100 from the Cummins dealer in my area. It's on the right side of the engine(facing it from the front of the truck) behind the fuel filter, if you take the fuel filter housing loose and lean it out of the way it gives you a lot more room to work.

I ran mine for over a yr doing the same thing yours does, the gauge is not accurate anyway as the PCM manipulates the oil pressure signal and the PCM decides what the driver should see for oil pressure. edventually I replaced the sending unit from Cummins it was 80$ canadian, I only replaced it because the check gauges/chime would go off and it was annoying, it was funny cause for almost a yr it never set off the chime...

Just about any simple oil pressure switch will work. When engine starts up and oil pressure switch goes open the computer generates a appropiate signal to dash gauge to show you a reasonable value for operating conditions.
Hook a real pressure gauge to oil filter housing and verify if you like. Don't understand how Cummins justifies prices. They are the start of the food chain on the part.
