Oil and filtration

Hello everyone,

I am new to the site. I have an 02, 2500 Quad cab, long wheel base, with 6 speed manual trany. Just had the first service done on it. Wow, $125.00 basicaly for an oil change.
So on the topic of oil: I read about a pre-luber that is suposed to eliminate the start up wear. also did some reading about by-pass filtration. Has anyone added any of these devices? Any comment advice is appreciated.

TIA

WoW! $125.00! That's why I do my own. I buy Fleetguard filters from Direct Injection. They have the best prices I've found and ship the same day. I use Shell Rottella T, bought by the case at Sam's.

As for the pre-luber, I guess they work but seems like an awful lot of trouble to go through for an engine that's gonna outlast the truck anyway. Just my .02.

Welcome to the site. If you want the straight scoop on anything about these trucks, this is the place to be!

Yo, 1955, welcome to the forum! No offense, but you were ripped! That's a basic oil change, right? Geno's Garage has Fleetguard Stratapore oil filters too, and as was said earlier Wal-Mart has Shell Rotella T or Delo for 7 bucks and change (US). You'll need 3 gallons, and they'll take to old oil. So if you do it yourself it will cost under 30 bucks. The FAQ has filter numbers if you're interested. Welcome to the forum, and if something comes up you're not too sure of, just ask and we're all happy to help you.

Re:Oil and filtration

Thank guys. Yes I will do my own, as I do it on my car and bike. True, the engine is supposed to outlast the truck, but one has to do fun projects also. Thanks again.

Re:Oil and filtration

You paid what a synthetic might cost at a dealer. Actually, most Dodge dealers in Houston have a campaign going on with discount deals on oil/filter/lub jobs. I thought this might be nation-wide, guess not.

And you should have recieved some coupons for free oil changes when you bought the truck! Go back to your salesman and ask for them if you can't find any in the pile of paperwork that came with the truck. Also ask your dealer's service dept if they will change your oil if you bring the oil from Wal-Mart and buy the Dodge recommended filter from the dealer.

Re:Oil and filtration

Based on reading posts for some time now, I'd say very few have a pre-luber, but bypass filters are not uncommon. I have a dual-remote by Amsoil, but if I had it to do over again I'd go with a single remote or an Oilguard unit. I very much like having the bypass filter; I believe it is an important part of extending your oil changes.
If I lived on a dirt road and/or had a high percentage of short-trip driving, I would be less likely to have a bypass filter and more likely to change oil every 5k.
My $0.02 is that the bypass filter will meet your needs for a "fun project" that protects your investment, and is much less complex than a preluber.

Re:Oil and filtration

I took DELO oil and the Stratopore filter to the dealer to change the oil. Precalled, and they would be glad to do it for $23 labor including disposal fees. Not bad. Turned out to be $39. Seems shop charge, and disposal fee was extra, and tax of course. Tax I can see, but I provided all the parts. Emailed dealer with my displeasure, no response (well, duh).

Will change my own thank you. Was considering dealer to change tranny pan to a Hy-Tec, but not now. Just have to find a nice clean no spill area to work on (under).

I am still trying to find out the bypass jet size for the ISB. I have asked before and never gotten a response. Anybody know?

Re:Oil and filtration

HEY GUYS DO YOURSELF AND A SMALL SERVICE CENTER A FAVOR. MOST SERVICE SHOPS HEAT WITH USED OIL BURNERS AND AS LONG AS THE OIL IS NOT FULL OF WATER OR ANTIFREEZE. THEY WOULD PROBABLY EVEN GIVE YOU A CONTAINER TO STORE IT IN. (FREE HEAT FOR THEM)

I don't remember the number, but I think it is about 1/2 the size of the Cummins bypass that is used on their larger engines. One reason you DON'T use the Cummins bypass filter head is because the orifice is sized wrong for our "little" engines.
P.S. - Oilguard = Racor (although Oilguard may be providing a different size orifice based on our application, but I don't think so)

Re:Oil and filtration

OUCH! I did an AMSOIL change for a lot less than that. The article on this page in the tech facts/general info on the "no mess oil change" is worth a read. It works great...sometimes simple ideas are the best.

Re:Oil and filtration

The size of the orface will be the size that can be bypassed from the pump without losing volume for the engine.

Re:Oil and filtration

Thanks. Please tell me the bracket that holds the filter, is it your make, and how is it attached. I have not finalized the location/mounting method yet. Am also considering relocating the batteries. Will decide over the winter and do the project in the spring.

Thanks again.
