Oil Filter loose
Oil Filter loose
Have a 2001 3500 4x4 and noticed an oil drip under the front axle. Upon opening the hood discovered oil running down the side of the oil filter. Was able to tighten the filter about 1/8 the turn with my hand and the oil leak stopped. The strange part of theis is that the last time I had the oil changed the tech told me that the oil filter was loose then too and wanted to bring it to my attention. Has anyone else had this happen?
Re:Oil Filter loose
It is cinda common. If you don't get it really tight at first then It will come loose. Bets bet is to check it every once and a while. It has happend to me in both my ctd. I think its because of all the vibration from out engines.<br>DM01
Re:Oil Filter loose
Make sure you oil the seal before installation and snug it good. What kind of filters are you using? The only one that ever loosened up on me was the MOPAR used with the free change by the dealer. Since switching to Fleetguard, I haven't had the problem again.
Re:Oil Filter loose
Never had this happen with either Fleetguard or Mopar filters on any of my CTD's. All are just hand tightened when installed. If you are having this problem, I would tighten it up with the oil filter wrench. That should keep it tight
Re:Oil Filter loose
I do, like Pit Bull said, after hand tightening always use the wrench and take it about a 1/4 of a turn tighter. I've never had any oil leak. Just be careful you don't overtighten or you'll have a pain in the a$$ getting it off. I think I saw a bulletin a couple of years ago stating that because of the high oil pressure when cold, and the vibration Cummins or Dodge recommended this.
Re:Oil Filter loose
I had a Fleet filter nearly come off of my 98.5 as I pulled into my brothers in Texas...oil litereally running down each side of the truck and all over underneath. It was put on at Cummins in Calgary as part of the service when they found my problems that DC could not.
<br>No oil leak 200 miles before when I fueled up. Must've vibrated loose. Never had the problem again. Good thing I never drove much further as the filter was on by only a few threads and I was down 3 quarts. That truck had some sort of hex on it...anything that could go wrong did go wrong and then some. :'(<br><br>The 01 I have now has been very good. ;D
