Re:Oil Filter

The first filter is tough to get off. Don't short the wire on the rear of the alternator. That will get you a trip to the dealer for a 160 amp fuse :Don't ask how I know
Use a good filter wrench, pull like crazy, don't short the alternator, and remove the air intake from the turbo so you don't tip the filter and spill oil once you get it broken lose.
I think DC finally fired the filter gorilla ??? I changed an 03 last week and it wasn't near as tight as the 01's :

hth

Re:Oil Filter

I went to the local Auto supply dealer and got a oil filter strap wrench. This was only after 2 hrs of trying with a regular steel oil filter wrench. I crushed it BAD. Check out the pic of the strap wrench. It works GREAT. OverFueled

Re:Oil Filter

On some of the trucks the a/c line is too close to the bottom of the filter. Hard to get to it with a metal wrench. Use a set of filter pliers or strap wrench instead.

Re:Oil Filter

I useda strap wrench in the past but now can remove them by hand. First thing though, put a 1 gallon freezer zip loc bag under the bottom of the filter in case of spillage. Then seal the filter in the bag after removing it from the truck. I save these to take to the oil recycling place.

Don Miller

Re:Oil Filter

I hear those straps work good but if you install the filter correctly you should or almost should be able to remove it by hand. And if you let the truck sit over night the oil in the filter drops for a clean oil filter change.

Re:Oil Filter

Filter strap is the only way to go. I changed oil today and the last place left the filter quite loose so it came off easily. I took the whole filter housing off to clean it and it made it even a little easier. Of course this is not necessary but it gives you plenty of room. I also installed one of those drain valves on the oil pan, it should make the next change even easier.

Re:Oil Filter

I use a steel band wrench, remove the air box, start from the front of the filter and slip it under the filter to get it over it. I then slide the band all the way up to the top of the filter where the flange is to keep from crushing it, and wrench away.

Re:Oil Filter

Yep, strap wrench here too. Just remember that to loosen it from the top, you have to set the ratchet to "Tighten". Made that mistake that once or twice. :
