oil consumption

Question oil consumption

just checked oil level after 5000 miles ,it shows 1 qt low .just wondering is this normal?

It's a '99 I would not worry about it. It will use a little, just so it does not go below the low line. You should not have to add oil between changes. Mine is very sensitive to how it is sitting. Checking it at the same location each time gives you a better idea. It varies at different truck stops. It is sensitive to level both side to side and fore and aft.

thanx HID, this truck only has 94000 miles on it (just breaking in)just curious of what was normal use for a cummins. Had been told years ago that mercedes engineers stated that an internal combustion engine should use 1 qt per 4000 miles. It showed that the oiler rings were doing their best job. I dont know if that is their standard now with the tighter clearances.
