Oil on backside of turbo

I have an oil leak on the right hand side of my motor. The oil filter is not loose. I did notice some oil residue not actual oil on the backside of the compressor section of the turbo. I pulled off the oil return line and cleaned up the surface. The gasket appeared to be okay. When I put it together I used some of that grey Loctite RTV. I hope that was okay. I also pulled off the metal elbow on the bottom of the compressor that goes to the intercooler. I did find a little bit of oil residue on the inside of the tube. It is not thin and runny but thicker. Is it possible that a seal could be leaking into the compressor side of the turbo? The oilly stuff on the back of the compressor is just on the bottom of half the turbo.
The only other place I could see any possibility was on the back of the block. Kinda hard to see but like it might be leaking from the head gasket.
Any ideas or advice?
I am quite busy for the next several days so it might be Wednesday before I can respond.
Thanks
Stan

My 02 is the same. I blame it on the pre oiled AFE air filter secreting oil into the turbo. When I pull the hose off the turbo is always oily on the fins.

I had the same problem recentlly on my 01.

Compressor side oil seal was starting to go. First noticed the issue when changing yet another VP44. intake tube was full of oil.

Went with a PDR modified 35, cleaned out the intake system, no more problems, and I still have my original 35 to be modded. that is about as good as it gets.

Thanks for the responses. Pind I was afraid that there might be a seal leaking in the turbo. Did you have any oil on the outside of the turbo? Also what kind of modifications are on the turbo you purchased from PDR? Did you clean out the intercooler and if you did what did you do?
Thanks

yes, there was oil residue on the outside as well, around the compressor housing. as far as cleaning the cooler, I didn't bother yet, as I haven't had time, nor have I had any ill effects from it.

Talk to josh at PDR about the turbo, they use a bigger compressor wheel, and a small amount of machining. I went with the stock 12cm back end, still spools quite well. Might go with a bit bigger compressor side at some point, but I'm not too worried over it right now.

Thanks pind. I will have to decide what I want to do.
I like your avatar Whitehorse culteral hub....
My daughter worked there as a travel agent for a year and a half around 2003. I moved her up there. I would like to get up there again and take a run up to Alaska some time with the 5th wheel.
Thanks
