observations of Airdog vs Carter
First off Airdog service is awesome!
Monday my airdog started popping 20amp fuses, so I called Airdog they had me remove the end plate and check for debris or damage in the housing/rotor area, I found a small crack and some very light marks but nothing to have caused the pump to pop fuses. and nothing that looked recent.
They sent me a new pump, and I got it on Friday which is quite amazing seeing as it had to clear the border to get to Canada.
I have the 150 with a drawstraw in the fuel canister. it also has four 3/8 holes drilled in it around the outside. With the Airdog I never ran out of fuel at 1/4 tank but if I was around 3/8 tank, I'd have brief periods of fuel pressue loss as the fuel sloshed around during turning or braking. I think I only had the pressure drops happen 2 times since I installed the AD. I'm a courior so I fill the tank every 2 days and usually I never add more than 90 liters so that leaves about 45 liters in the tank.
So being that my income is based on my truck I needed my truck running, If my truck is down I dont get paid. so I jumped in my can and ran off to a hydralic shop and picked up a couple of fittings to adapt my old carter into the Airdog spot. I made a simple bracket and everything bolted and plugged in like it was made to be there, for the airdog return that goes back to the fillerneck I put a plastic bag over the fitting tapped it up good and bent the hose back on its self and strapped it to the frame. If I had been thinking far enough ahead I would have gotten a fitting that would plug the hose.
So I've been driving like this till yesterday and what I've found is that with the Carter I do not have any pressure fluxuations even at 1/8 a tank and that includes panic braking or hard turns, I ran it low enough for the low fuel light to come on! I suspect the Carter does not draw enough fuel to empty the canister. unlike the 150 AD which moves more fuel than it sends to the IP. This tells me that there is no problem with my Draw straw instal.
Another point of intrest was with the carter mounted on the frame with the 1/2 line, pressure never dropped below 9psi with the Juice on 4x4, with 1000lbs in the bed, and on a WOT run in four wheel drive...go fiqure when that same pump was on the engine it would drop down to 4-5psi with just an EZ on a WOT run. !
I'm going to experiment a little before replacing the carter with the AD, I want to see if it can keep up on 5x5 under hard use. I was on the hiway last night on my way back from a HotShot and I ran it on 5x5 and hit 90mph a couple of times and the pressure never dropped (I had the alert set to 8psi) likely at hiway speeds the fuel demand is not near the same as from a dead stop WOT run.
My solution would be to run the AD return that normally goes into the filler neck hose and move it to the fuel canister. I'm going to get a draw straw from Vulcan. I'm going to check with AD first to see if there would be an issues with returning the fuel back to the suck side of the pump (aeriation issues maybe?)
and the plug and play Carter goes behind the seat in case its ever needed again.
If I ever have an issue on the side of the road it would be simple to unscrew the 2 hoses off the AD, hook up the Carter and plug in the electrical. tie it to the AD and drive away, likely take no longer than changing filters.
I believe Vulcan has something in the works to cure the 1/4 tank blues, hopefully it comes out soon.
This post is not intended to speak ill of AD, in fact just the opposite, they stood behind their product and went out of their way to ship the replacement quickly and they picked up the return shipping tab as well!!!!!! I'm sure mine failing is not the norm, but the exception.
I have NO regrets purchasing their product. and would do it again.
