Question NV5600 Drain/Refill procedure?

Getting ready to put Redline in my 6-speed and have not crawled under the truck yet to see how to drain/refill it. Is there a drain plug or do I need buy one of those bottles with a squeeze bulb on it to pull all the fluid out? Or is there a panel I have to remove that would require a new gasket? The owners manual says capacity is 9.5 pints, but when filling, how do I check for proper level? If I have to remove any bolts, does anyone have torque specs for what they should be re-tightened to?

Thanks,
~IreallyneedtoordertheshopmanualRob

Drain-- remove bottom center PTO cover bolt on driver's side.

Refill-- 17MM Allen wrench (hex key) for drain plug. I just put in 5 qts, because you'll spill enough to account for the extra half-pint.

MTL works well for me.

What Hohn said on draining.
For filling:
You can remove the top cover (gear shift) and just pour it in- no spills. Mine was filled up to the top bolt on the pto cover by a transmission shop in OKC.

The 17mm hex wrench is about $8 at Sears.

Excellent, thanks for the info y'all, written so even an engineer can understand.

hotdram,

Please pick me up one of everything. Unless you are going to see the Snap-On man. Then get me five of everything.

Copenhagenjunkie, hope your tranny isn't filled up above the bottom of the fill hole. More is very definitely not better and will cause your trans to run hot and eat seals.

Saw this on Fritz's ram page on what the proper level should be:

"The fill plug is located on the driver's side of the main case (Fig 14). The proper lube oil fill level is the bottom of the fill hole. And you probably already know how to check the" lubricant level while the vehicle is on a level surface, in order to get an accurate reading."
Here is the link: NV5600 Link

That page also states:
Remember that sealant must be applied to the bolt threads before reinstalling the bolt and filling the transmission.
What kind of sealant would be a good choice?

Thanks,
~Rob

notice the part that says "will never have to drain or add lubricant. " - whats up with that?

I have 5 jugs of Redline MTL waiting to go in...it has just been too cold. I debated on what fluid to use for awhile. Have heard that it is better to add five full quarts and fill through the top PTO bolt hole...so, I dunno??

Rob, I would just use some black Permatex RTV...

Wondered about the "never" drain part myself.
Figured permatex was the way to go, just wanted a second opinion, thanks.
