Is overfilling the nv5600 to 6qts just too much? I tow quite a bit and am worried that this might cause the tranny to get too hot and destroy seals--however I recall reading that some people have been running 6qts in the nv5600 for quite a while and think its a great thing to do. So whats yalls consensus since Im getting ready to put new fluid (the old has 20000on it) in it before I drive home in a month.

I think most are running Red Line MTL or a mix of MTL and MTF.

 

redline MTL here. gonna dump it soon to add fastcoolers and then refill with MTL again.

 

I'm running 6qts of Amsoil MTF in mine. So far no issues to report.

I've run 6 quarts of either one for more than 4 years and have had zero problems.

Started running Redline originally but switched over to Amsoil about 2 years ago. Both are great products.

Thanks for the replies guys--how hard is it to take off the shifter assembly(so I can get the full 6qts in)? Any special tools or knowledge needed? Is there anything in particular to watch out for (I think I remember reading that there was a small part that could fall into your tranny if you werent careful).

you'll have to pull of the cupholder, centerconsole assembly. then there is a bunch of screws holding the large rubber boot assembly down through the floor. then the 4 bolts that hold the shifter in. nothing fancy, mine was a PITA though.

 

It's pretty much a no brainer to do. Pop the console out, 4 bolts for the shft tower and dump away. If you have the time, reseal the shift tower when assembling and don't drive the truck for a couple of hours. It just gives the sealer a little time to set up real good and not have to worry about leaks.

Just use a standard RTV type sealer/gasket maker. Find it at any local auto parts store, Wal-mart auto dept, etc, etc

I filled mine through the top bolt hole on the PTO cover.

Ok, I am hijacking this but for a good reason.

What do you use to fill up through the bolt ? I had a hard time just doing through the regular fill....

 

I have a one gallon gear lube pump bottle with a small nozzle at the end of the hose. Makes it easy to get the lube into the tranny.

I find a hill drive the truck on it sideways and put the extra Qt. in that way.Then theres no chance of buggering up your silicone around the top bolt and its a heck of a lot easier than pulling the boot.Make sure the hill is steep enough.
