NV4500 Troubles
NV4500 Troubles
Well I think something is headed south in my trans. I went a little over a week ago to the Simpson County KY pull and won the 2500/SRW 3500 class.
Next week trans starts making noise 1/2 way to work or home (little less than 20 miles). Sounds like something smacking up against the shifter at first...but I checked the floor and nothings rubbing anywhere...sounds like its come from the trans. Well once the trans gets good and hot....almost before I get to work or all the way home it starts making a binding noise?
Today I pulled the PTO covers on both sides and spun the drive-line to check for any damaged gears. I could not see any damage at all?!
Well after calling Cousin Billy @ BRC Diesel I decided to pull the driveshaft and check the snap ring on the back of the Transfer case. Well...the snap ring was fine...but I over stretched/bent it trying to put it back on. So now my truck has gone from making noise's to being down till I can get another snap ring on Monday.
Anybody had any experience like this? I know its hard to diagnose from just trying to explain it, but I'm hoping somebody has some suggetions of any time. Right now.....its not looking good.

You didn't mention oil - was any in there? What was the color, if there was?
Driveshaft cross\bearings or\and center carrier bearing, or maybe clutch or\and throwout bearing - replace the pilot shaft bearing while you're in there

I didn't even think about the carrier bearing.....with 20 plus hooks and God only knows how many 3rd gear burnouts it could be toast. Plus I hoped 3 or 4 good times before clutching it last week.
Thanks for making me think about that!
I had a similar sound coming from my tranny, and after i pulled it it was the rear countershaft bearing. That bearing had totally torn to bits and nothing was supporting the shaft. Thank God it didn't hurt the gears. After we put a new bearing in, everything is ok.......so far. It might be worth checking out, just my .02. Good luck with whatever it turns out to be.
