nv4500 problems!!
Here's my 2 cents.
I agree. The cost to tear down a transmssion is expensive. Not to mention you don't know what is being done when it's done. The experience of taking the transmission out of the truck and tearing it open (taking the cover off) and seeing what's inside is a priceless thing. If you have another vehicle, I'd do it. Once that is done, even if you don't take it apart, you should still save some money just by not allowing them to take it out and put it back in. Remember, takiing it out is actually very simple. Have a transmission jack (Harbor frieight on sale is about $100.00.) You can see how easy it is to put in a clutch while you are there.
If you pull the cover off the transmission, you can take a look, (inspect) to see what looks damaged. I had a bad bearing in mine. Right at the bottom.
I can never remember the company's name. They have 4x4 in the name.
This guy has a video which you can buy that will tell you how to tear down a transmission and how to rebuild one.
The gear pullers are expensive ($2,500), so, I would (as someone mentioned) take to a machine shop, transmission shop and let them pull the shafts appart (gears off the shaft) Inspect the shaft. The company with the video has rebuild kits and the owner is a great guy to talk to. Really willing to help.
I only paid $600 to have my transmission rebuilt. That was just bench work time. I pulled the transmisison, removed the transfer case (be careful, a ton of fluid will leak out. I wasn't prepared for this and surprise...) took it to him. About 2 days later, it was done.
Transmission fluid is expensive. About $24.00 per quart. Amsoil is about 1/2.
Worse think you could do is blow it up, and have to do it again and it still would have cost you the same amount if you let someone do it completely.

ya id love to save as much money as i can but i dont have another vehicle, i dont have a shop and its flippin cold around here right now! guess im just bummed about the whole deal. all of a sudden the whole drivetrain went bad. o well guess its life.
Sorry
Sorry to hear about the problem. I know I don't want to work outside. So, when you drive it, what do you hear. Is it a crunching sound??
Is it just hard to shift. Did I read 1,2 5 are working o.k.??
When this happened, where you under a heavy load?
Have you checked your fluid??
If no fluid, that could be bad. See if you can get the sit port open. Check fluid level.
How many miles on the truck??

Quad4x4.com for the video and NV4500 repair manuals.
Blumenthal Transmissions out of Oklahoma City for the Castrol Syntorque fluid. $53.90 for 5 quarts delivered to your front porch, including shipping and thankfully no sales tax! Sure beats the "S-t-e-a-l-e-r-s-h-i-p"**********" prices, eh?
Good Luck,
Steve

Castrol
Well, That's freekish?? Is that right??
I went to the dealer and they wanted 53.00 for 2!!!!
Holly crap

Oh well, I am switching to Amsoil anyway.
I don't like getting seriously ripped off.
I'd buy a barrel of the stuff and sell it by the gallon for 10 dollars less per
gallon and still make out like a bandit..

That's cheap. Get it while it lasts..

Yes Doc, you can also call Mary directly at Blumenthal Transmissions, Oklahoma City. BTW- They're just doing your very same idea...buying by the drum and selling by the gallon.
Illflem, aka Bill, the wise rancher from Montana, explained that Castrol has a contract to sell their Syntorque to the dealerships in one-quart size containers. Apparently others, including Blumenthal and Quad 4x4, can purchase by the drum and merely re-bottle it for sale.
The 5 quarts for $53.90 w/ free shipping and no tax was a good deal indeed...especially since I picked up a QK1000 filtration kit that bolted onto the transmission in place of the passenger-side PTO cover. The kit, with a small fibered filter and two ground magnets needs about another 10 oz. of fluid, so the 5 quart quantity worked well.
Seems to now shift into reverse and 1st gear a little more smoothly. Oh, I tried the shifter removal technique, since it was rather cold outside, but couldn't manage to get the ring to disengage. I used a funnel and a clear vinyl tube threaded down from the engine compartment and shim wedged into the side filler hole.
